lock your leg at the full extension (bottom of spin/ when cranks are vertical)
allow this to push you off of your seat (and thus unweight the rear) and the cranks to come horizontal
at this point push back on your back foot, and pull up on your front foot.
the position essentially is humping the stem.I ride a 50:17. its just practice, practice, practice.
I'm working on it. -

[edit] beaten to it :D

The lower the gear, the easier it is to skid. I am a weakling and a failure, so i had to come down from 16 to 18 on the back (48-18) before i could even muster a tiny skid.

get a lower gear guys and learn how to spin faster. it's so much more fun :)
-
• #6
Whats the minimum speed you need to be going to try this out. I take it you need to be doing a bit of speed to get the bump up from the pedals.
-
• #7
faster is easier.

but be careful on your new bike, i hear it wasn't cheap.

about 5,000,000,000 nm/s.
oooh and pj- vicious (he's only just gotten over the first set of jokes) -

just out of interest- ww- what lock have you got?
just for insurance purposes obviously.... -
• #11
don't even go there...

• #12
sorry.
anyway, as i was saying, you have to go fast to skid properly, it's a question of kinetic energy and momentum i think. but it's funny, sometimes i accelerate when i plan on pulling off a big skid. it scares the people waiting at the lights. it's pretty retarded behaviour.

• #13
ive done that. so amusing. The cabbie in front didn't think so, for some reason.

You dont need to be going fast though. I'd recommend you start slowly and work your way up. what matters is that your weight is off the back wheel, not the speed you're going, and it takes a bit of time to get this right.
You can try doing it at top speed first, but you may very well just hit the tarmac VERY hard. and in an odd angle too, if you're leaning forward. :)

Yeah, you don't need to go fast unless you wanna do a massive skid. It's easier on smooth or wet roads too, or the grass but it's bumpy so if you break your collarbone or rib don't blame me.
You can skid going quite slow, you just need your weight further forward.. like what asm is talking about. Can we please leave wapping alone now? -
• #16
Yeah, xactly. I can only do big skids without leaning right into the stem when its wet... need to work on my technique. Or just use the brake. :) Or just lean right into the stem and look cool/like an idiot :)

i said sorry. i'll whisper it sweetly to him if you like. if you do those long slow skids you end up looking like eddie the eagle edwards, straddling the bars with your groin as you hurtle (slowly) down the road.

I used to have 48x16 on my bike,, they really hurt my knees when i skid. now i change my cog to 18. (48x18)
they seems better , but i need to ask people who have tried before, which cog sz is best for 48t crank set ?i see guys from Mash SF skid so easily, do u know what gearing they use ??
Thx u so much

i ride 48 x18 and like the gearing. a 19 or 17t will give you more skid patches though so the tyre may last longer. the spinnier the gear the easier to skid.
i don't know about the mash sf lot but i find skidding 48 x 18 easy enough
-
• #21
i reckon the mash guys ride low gear ratios thats why it looks like they're going so fast + with the hills you need to be able to break easier.
i reckon it depends on the tyre too, i've got a gator skin on at the mo and on a dry day if you skid you stop fast cause of traction but it can be too sticky sometimes. i was riding a cheap tyre recently and thats was too easy to skid.

Run a front brake and save your tyres?

And have no fun!
Gatorskins are vv grippy which means they're not great for skidding. Armadillos are pretty slippy with excellent puncture protection so they're good for skidding. But not great for riding on.
48x18 is what i rode, found i skidded through tires far too quickly even with a front brake. I'd go for a 19t on the back, will give you plenty of skid spots and a gentle gear for learning to skid/slow down with the pedals.

48 19 seconded here. Get spinning and skidding :-)

EVery time one of these "what ratio?" posts comes along, I get to add another bike to the list.. :)
42x16
44x17
48x19
How much does your gear ration effect the ease of stopping /skidding?? Im riding on 48/16t and although i've got a front break, im still trying to get this down, u guys got any tips or tricks or maybe im using bad technique
