Yep, that's shim.
.Don't be a sack full of cocks, most cyclists are lycra wearing showboating freaks, that doesn't mean it's ok to make passé remarks about their sex/gender/sexuality.

Indeed, it's quite rude to call her a "him", she like to keep her past hidden and focus on the future.

good point, although surely you can't know what his/her preference is without asking? could just be a man in a dress.

I think that's pretty fucking obvious don't you think?

There's a big difference between 'him' which is a pronoun, and 'shim' which is a really rude kiddie schoolyard pronoun. It's like calling someone a 'fag', which I don't think it cool - what about you?

This is why I refer to him as "him". Without knowing what his preferred pronoun is all you can really do is guess. A guy wearing a skirt doesn't necessarily identify as female, he might identify as male but just like wearing skirts, and that's totally ok - as is identifying as female.
It makes it difficult for other people to assign a gender label unless they ask directly (which isn't always practical), but bollocks to other people's assignations, really. Without asking, you'll never know what the correct designation should be.

Ed isn't supporting "shim" as being a valid or acceptable designation, so I'm not sure why you're having a go at him. Ed's chosen to use the female pronoun instead of the male pronoun, which in the absence of having asked which is preferred is just as valid as using "he". Actually Ed's choice likely shows more sensitivity than those of us using "he" even if it does make a similar assumption about a stranger's identity.
Edit: I've just realised that you think Ed actually posted that. He didn't, you know. Anyone can edit anyone else's post when they quote to make it look as though they said something they didn't...

Yeah, sorry, I got my wires crossed with the quote/misquote, the assignation of gender isn't really the issue, it's more the assumption that anything outside of the 'A' or 'B' binary is inherently something to be ridiculed. We should cherish the freedom of our weird different London people - this isn't Russia.
Anyway, thanks for letting me rant and responding intelligently.

Why are you calling them 'weird', just because they're different? :P

what are you saying about the polo forum?

Hundreds of football (am guessing Newcastle/Chelsea?) fans spilling out of pubs, on to pavements, on to roads, in and around Knightsbridge earlier, many of whom were wearing animal onesies. (Didn't see hats in amongst them though.)

This, of course, and high-heels.Anyone can edit anyone else's post when they quote to try to make a point or make themselves look funnier/wittier/more interesting. Some times this works, but boy can it be mega-cringy when it fails...:/

I like to quote other people's posts and add in subtle misspellings and greengrocer's apostrophes. It's a compulsion and I will not seek help.

I call her a her because I've spoken to her last year in Clapham.

Aha! Top work. She it is, then.
(FWIW, Future, misattributions aside, I do agree with you and would hope we've all mostly got past the schoolyard bullying stage by now)

Resisting urge to add a greengrocer's apostrophe to your greengrocer's apostrophes. -

Exactly. Grayson Perry pops in to mind. He's married with kids, but uses a female alter ego. Both, his masculine persona and the female alter ego, form the full picture.

I agree! and I lay no claim to inventing the word - as Brun said I heard Middle of Nowhere refer to Stryclists/ Strikelists at Norths on Tues - still makes me giggle.
