  • I see the Japan crew are running the risk of fines for not having their rear brakes attached.

Right now, especially. It's the start of university and school years and as usual the cops come out in force for a week or two to stand on street corners all across the country and set upon errant cyclists. Kyoto isn't so bad but I believe they're pretty hot on fixed gear violations in Tokyo.

A friend of mine lives in Tokyo and he was fined 50,000 yen (about £400) for not running a rear brake. Insane.

    Good seeing you Mick!

    ?

  • Tibbs' with the gold hubs and cranks. Love that they've been spotted in Japan! Can't remember who else has gone. Emile,Thom, Mark, Lola?

Shouldn't say with whom (if anyone) respecting his privacy ;)

  • hopefully it was his girlfriend! (or chainbreaker)

Ah, if that's Tibbs' bike then that's not who I met, although I suspect they were all together. I met the guy riding the dark red fixed gear with both brakes and padded downtube - he was looking for his friends (Tibbs and co, I guess!).

Hmm. I remember Tibbs and Emile discussing this very issue at Souths, last week. So it's not as if they hadn't thought about it.

  • Yeah, apparently Tibbs has a dummy brake to fit when he gets to Tokyo. He should be ok. Talking to him on Facebook at the moment. The wonders of t'internet, eh?

And it was Emile I bumped into in person. Mystery solved!

  • Asain Asian dude with a black bike walking up farringdon rd, front aerospoke and did i see pursuit+tri bars?

This has just confused my urge to flame. Please spell correctly in future so that I can do my job.

  • Just spotted a guy in a bike polo top, with the name Chunk on it, in my office. Think he might have been a contractor.

    Apologies, please proceed!

  • The moment's passed. I'm not in the mood anymore.

  • Mr D. James demonstrating exemplary road positioning and sartorial style on Upper Richmond Rd this afternoon. Didn't recognise him at first - it's been a few years.

  • ^^loving the Japan-spot. It's Tibbs and a load of non-forumers and Drew87. I think the bike in question belongs to Thom who made the WUTM film.

  • Ha ha, that was me, good seeing you and your confused friend.

Hope you had a good ride, pal.

Someone bellowed a massive DAS across the A20 (somewhere outside the M25) at me and a non-forum friend. Put a huge smile on my face, especially because it confused the heckins out of my friend.

  • Who did I DAS on Mersea Island on Friday with quite a slave of a bike?

  • Brakeless, clipless pedals but not shoes Dolan Seta in Holborn.

  • An older gentleman in full-on lurid orange/red lycra campaigning for something (the big ride?) at the bottom of London Fields this morning.
I'm always confused by this approach - taking my bag off to stash a leaflet and/or stop to sign up for something is the last thing I want to do on a commute! Especially at traffic lights with a short sequence.

  • I saw an LCC guy doing the same thing outside the South Bank University a few weeks ago - he waved his clipboard at me and shouted something as I whizzed past and I replied "no ta" because I'd mistaken him for one of those negative-number IQs that keep trying to offer me newspapers outside the tube station every single morning when I am on my bike, in traffic. It was only 3 miles later I remembered he was standing next to a big sign saying "LCC" on it and that he must have wanted me to do something cycling-related.

  • It's the Go Dutch campaign:

    http://lcc.org.uk/sign-go-dutch-petition

Essentially LCC is getting people to sign a big petition (by way of your name and post code - email address for more info is optional) in the hope of achieving a big enough number to prove to the Mayoral candidates that as cyclists we need to be listened to, consulted, and made better/improved provisions for.

    The strap line is:

“I want the mayoral candidates to pledge to make London more liveable for everyone by making our streets as safe and inviting for cycling as they are in Holland”

Holland is used as an example - IMO, ignore that part and sign up whether you agree with the artist style plans or not as if we can't be seen to work together and have a common goal we will never be taken seriously. The actual chances of Holland being re-created in London is near-zero, however the chances of money being spent on cyclists and things improving are much higher.

The volunteers are attempting to get you to sign up on paper but your online signing will suffice, it's just another form of getting the word out. The Big Ride is a closed road, 'Sky Ride' style event with marshal led feeder rides and it's a bit of a political statement hidden inside a good time riding your bike. If you're into that sort of thing. Even if you're not, if you're free, just come show your face for 30 mins or skip through on your way to somewhere else. It's all about numbers and working together.

Yeah, once I got to work I looked it up, so from that angle it worked. Just not sure about the timing/placement if you're actually wanting people to sign up on the spot... Maybe it's just me always running late haha!

  • I understand your POV and I have mentioned it as I have been collecting signatures myself last week and will be at Hyde Park this week.

I have been at stations and many people are late for a train and just ride past saying sorry, but if you were inspired to look and see what it was all about then it still worked.

Quite a few people have been willing to stop and chat about it, which is really good, and plenty of people have taken flyers and said they'll get friends, colleagues, and family to sign up.

It's not just about people who are already cyclists, it's about those people who want to be cyclists and people who care about cyclists. Not everyone who isn't on 2 wheels hates us (thankfully!), I have had many pedestrians come up and sign saying they want to help out their colleagues and friends who are cyclists and "it's about time money was spent on cyclists on something decent, not just blue lanes!" to quote one nice man.
