but if it makes him feel safe, without actually learning how to ride properly, you've spent a load of money on stuff that (IMO) has a less effect on your safety than (free) training.

I've seen lots of kids on school trips recently with flouro vests. On the one hand it seems a good idea, on the other, "'elf 'n safety gone mad, innit?"
