Additionally Em you have done considerably more riding than Max (he has probably spent more time on the internet posting "ha" than on a bike). I believe you have ridden brakeless BMX, I am not sure Max has, hence why I asked how many times Max had stopped using a foot on the rear wheel.

Commuted on it ever day last week and twice this week.
Racking up the miles, last week was just over 130. This week is around 35ish. -

Eaxctly as I thought, so you have learned to do it and can do it instinctively. I doubt someone not used to doing this would have the reflex to do so.

It's a pointless discussion to be honest as doing it on a brakeless BMX is very different to doing it on a road or fixedwheel bike.
Additionally, having snapped a chain on a fixed previously the chain wrapped around the rear cog and get lodged between the hub and chainstay.
Admittedly it did lock the rear wheel but by that point I'd already been thrown forwards onto the bars with the same force that I was applying to the pedals.Max may think he knows how to deal with it. In reality it would be very different.

To be fair, if I was riding a freewheel bike with only one brake and the cable snapped, I'd just step on the rear tyre and skid the wheel to a stop.
That's just me.
Max' post, by the way, was a joke, and quite a good one. But then, James was of course quick-witted enough to have worked that one out and was in no way distracted by spoiling for a Friday popcorn fight. ;)

Ta for the education! I will as of this weekend (pedals arrival dependant) be a more worthy rider hopefully! Being new to this I had to rely upon my own thoughts on how to preserve my own life! What you say makes sense and i will advise any new riders I know.
You and many others may be very experienced and knowledgable, but those less knowledgable may also have some intelligence!! ie to realise my limitations (at speed without foot retention) and as I said just roll easy everywhere instead of trying to blow like the wind.
As for the "gear" "cadence" you are no doubt correct.
I'm attempting to take this as education rather than opinionated patronisation - see bonfire of the Ada for doing what she thought sensible!
Easier to get used to it *with *foot retention.
You were less safe, and more of a danger to others.
Thank god you were probably mashing a stupid gear at a learner cadence.

I ride a brakeless single-speed and can stop instantly using the power of Chi withouth losing my balance. Actually I got rid of the chain as the chi does all work. That's also why I never get spotted.

• #29964
But what if the Chi fails? Do you have another?

I may have misread/missed some discussion. I thought we were talking about stopping if your brake cable snapped! riding ss with one break vs fixed where you do not need a brake!
if not the below applies!
How?
I think BleakReference is right, brakeless fixed gear is as dangerous as single brake SS.
If your chain snaps on brakeless fixed you are just as fucked as your brake cable snapping on the SS.

I've met you dude - at the Intrepid Fox, you knew some girl from Chester who worked with me. It was a few years back but it's enough for me to be certain that even with some assistance (we?), you couldn't. Cheers though.

Me either, that place was a poor excuse for a rock pub.
Still, in that first halcyon summer, it was almost possible to believe that it might just tip the scales and become what it'd always dreamed of - a middling excuse for a rock pub.

And even then only if it's perpatrated against James by someone other than I.

It was a bit of both.
Berwick St is the place to be today.. Skully at the Blue Post.. hand shake.. A lovely blue Colnago sitting curbed outside flat white (lock that thing up whoever you are..) And... Billy Childish, strolling up the market.. Love that man..
