My uncle has HED3 (front) on one of his bikes. I had a go and it didn't inspire much confidence. Despite what they say a light crosswind does have a noticable effect and I feel I wouldn't feel comfortable riding them in any harsher wind conditions.
Also I worry about something which has been designed for such a specific job being used outside what I would consider its 'comfort zone'. Im not sure whether you'll use it exclusively on the track but I would question there ability to withstand too many typical riding-on-shitty-street knocks.
My best suggestion is to simply(?) find someone who has them to let you have a go. Good luck.

You've already asked to buy a front wheel off ImOnCrank.. guess that's why it was assumed you are looking for front wheel only.
Getting most of your info from a manufacturer's website isn't so good. They are hardly going to bag their own product are they.
Weight: http://www.damonrinard.com/weights.htm#wheels Close to 2kg for the wheelset is heavy. Again, don't always believe what the manfacturer tells you.
"More TDF top ten TT finishes" means what? They sponsor more pro teams? To us, non-pros, it means fsck all.
Durability: I'm not in the market for carbon wheels.. so I have no idea if HED are any less durable than similar wheels. But, you would know I'm not light therefore I'm never going to have wheels made of carbon holding me up and especially not when they cost £400 and can't be trued when I put them into a pot hole. Are you buying these for your racing career or for riding the street? It would help to have a use in mind. I'd hardly suggest buying a set to lockup outside Tesco but if you were racing TT's then perhaps they would be a suitable suggestion and then I could better target my googling :P
No idea how HED wheels ride, read some comments: http://bikehugger.com/2007/03/aero_wheels.htm
You've already asked someone to buy one.. so why now are you gathering info.. if not to justify the purchase? -

want a bling shiznit front wheel to attract wimmen and other njs/hed/rensho geeks then buy one.Where have you got the idea I am after just a front wheel, or indeed a front wheel at all ?[/quote]
Um... "ImOnCrank, email me at leewilsonwolfe@hotmail.com (there is no email address in your profile so I can't email you) if you want to sell me your HED3s."

hippy You've already asked to buy a front wheel off ImOnCrank.. guess that's why it was assumed you are looking for front wheel only.
Poor logic my friend ! :) Your sentence is one word too long, there is nothing in what I have said that suggests a front wheel only.
Let's not get into an epistemological punch up when I can give you the facts, I am (was?) after a set, front and back, ImOnCrank has a front he was talking about selling, I asked to buy it. If he had a pair, I would have made a similar request.
hippy

[edited to remove chaff]
You've already asked someone to buy one.. so why now are you gathering info.. if not to justify the purchase?
Looking to buy a pair of wheels, questions are asked, shops rung, things considered and reconsidered, prices looked at, people emailed, prices agreed, other wheels discovered and so on.
I was pretty close to getting a set of HED3s (from the HED3 UK website), but this thread has certainly made me reconsider, why are you so keen to see me as someone who is attempting to justify buying something ?

"why are you so keen to see me as someone who is attempting to justify buying something ?"
You ask to purchase wheels.
You ask for information about those wheels.
In.. that.. order.Imoncrank: "I'll sell you mine for £350."
Which part of that sentence made you think he has a set? Poor logic on your part methinks. -

hippy "why are you so keen to see me as someone who is attempting to justify buying something ?"
You ask to purchase wheels.
You ask for information about those wheels.
In.. that.. order. This conversation is becoming very boring. :(
I think you need to concern yourself with what is happening in your world and not become overly exercised at what you feel is the correct way for me to decide what I should get to put my bike together.
For clarity, I asked Imoncrank to email me if he was interested in selling his front wheel to me, that is not the same as me actually buying it, it may be that I want to see if I can establish a good price or perhaps find out what kind of condition it is in and so on.
The fact is he did not sell it to me, nor did he email me, now if you wish to employ your time telling me off for reconsidering getting HED3s or thinking about other wheels or asking question about them, then go for it, enjoy yourself.
hippy
Imoncrank: "I'll sell you mine for £350."
Which part of that sentence made you think he has a set? Poor logic on your part methinks.Nothing ! Absolutely nothing about that sentance makes me think he has a set, you would seem to be struggling with this whole concept, so let me try and explain.
I was considering getting a set of wheels for the the new bike I am building. With me so far ?
I was thinking about a pair of HED3s. Imoncrank, mentioned he had a front for sale.
I was interested in looking at that wheel, I asked the fellow to email me if he was interested in selling it.
Now, I am no semantic detective by any standard, but what I can say is that no part of my conversation indicates that I only want to run a front HED3.
Anyhow enough of all this, we are just bickering here, I asked a simple question "Why are wheels like the Hed3 good for TT/triathlon but not used for general road racing ?" - if you wish to see this as me justifying buying some terrible bike wheels, by all means knock yourself out, enjoy it, but I won't waste any more time on this forum, I will look elsewhere for info, I am no fan of people staying up late just to hound others around internet forums.
Once more thanks for the relevant info, it is genuinely appreciated.
best of luck everyone.

guess not everyone is used to our sense of humour here?

Boring and yet you and I continue to post to it.. awww.. I was having fun.
If you don't want me or anyone else being concerned about how you put a bike together - why post questions to a public forum about bike parts? You asked "Why are wheels like the Hed3 good for TT/triathlon but not used for general road racing ?"
I answered this. You never answered my questions about intended use of the wheel. This kind of information is pretty vital when it comes to forum members providing you with real world info and alternative wheel suggestions.
"I am no fan of people staying up late just to hound others around internet forums" hahaha that's great, that one.
Now I need to find some 20" chrome rims with low-pro rubber for my Range Rover to make parking easier..

tuppence:
isn' t£350 that the going rate for a custom bob jackson vigorelli frame? and £464 the going rate for a custom mercian frame?

Lateral Deflection: (the aerospokes came last with 5.23mm)....WTF??!!! automatic braking on tight turns!
aerospokes are 2394g a pair..They look like plastic wheels from cheap Halfords BMXs and from the look of those stats thats probably what they are...
Can someone remind me why people are queuing up to buy these pieces of American shit?

ever since tory blair came back from visiting bush with that funny elbows out, hands about to draw pistols swagger this country has gone down the shitter and people have lusted after funny looking wheels that are overpriced and don't perform well, maybe under gordon brown things will improve and the fashion victims will see the error of their ways?

MrSmith as usual it's become a hippy thread.
There's another kind of thread?
Where have you got the idea I am after just a front wheel, or indeed a front wheel at all ?
I am not particularly interested in your sense of what is right and wrong, my questions can be answered very practicably without any moralizing, but thanks for your input anyhow.
