Ding, dong, dell,
Pussy's in the well. Who put her in? Little Johnny Thin. Who pulled her out? Little Tommy Stout. What a naughty boy was that, To try to drown poor pussy cat, Who never did him any harm, And killed the mice in his father's barn.

Massive flashbacks to when I was an angsty teen!
The constant flow of helmet threads have made me decide to dig out the CD when I get home. :)
Dont have any good yet forgotten CDs by bands called 'brakeless' or 'What GI?' though :(

Should start a thread called "Why you should listen to Helmet!" And then load it with Helmet clips!
Then we can all listen to Helmet and everything will be good! I put this in some other helmet thread the other day:

This is getting far too off-topic. Just stick a lid on a forget about it.
I had an unfortunate fall, whilst wearing a helmet, and it knocked me silly for a day or two. I since bought a new helmet and never ride without it. I put it on and don't even know it's there. It just makes sense. Unfortunately a lot of people won't put a lid on until they've had an accident and realised how much it does to protect you and how little it takes to wear one.

I don't think all of these 'official' websites and statistics help so much. Nobody wants to read about what the chances are of killing yourself without a helmet and so on. I think it's just important to point out that it's not about looking fashionable. Who cares if you're enjoying urself and are safer at the same time?

Who cares if you're enjoying urself and are safer at the same time?
The 'if you are safer at the same time' is kind of what's at issue here. Hence why people are interested in reading about the relative chances of killing yourself with and without a helmet.
(dammit, I promised myself I wouldn't get drawn in)

If you'd written 'who cares as long as you're enjoying urself regardless of whether you wear a helmet or not' I'd be more inclined to agree.

but that completely undermines what I was saying. My point was that I wear a helmet and still have as much fun, if not more cus I feel safer than without. Why don't people wear helmets? It seems like I'm having to give a reason as to why I AM wearing a helmet. So why aren't people explaining why theu aren't?

And to some people, riding a bike is simply too dangerous. So maybe we should stop riding bikes altogether?

The Shickster had an interesting and well put together argument against helmets, with statistics and everything.....but i'm too lazy to look for it right now.
-
• #997
The only real argumant against helmets is that they look crap. And if you don't normally wear one, you feel stupid when you put one on the first few times.
Anyone can manipulate statistics to prove anything.
Its down to common sense, and then whether your own tastes overule that common sense. -

Hmm some interesting, misleading and outdated statistics there. Haven't looked at all the data but I know the Australian stuff is now out of date and there has been large jumps in cycle usage over the last few years. In the Australia cycle helmet laws have been enforced since 1991 so the new generation of people cycling to work have had to ride with helmets there entire lives so have considerably differnet views to previous generations who had grown up not wearing helmets and gave up cycling when helmet laws were introduced.
I have always worn a helmet while cycling and think nothing of it. I don't think its going to save my life if I hit a car at 60mph but I have smashed a few and in those cases they have probably at least saved me from some nasty scalp scars.
its sort of Ding Dong between OS and Balki
