• As they mentioned there is a short clip on their Facebook page where he explains why. This was filmed before the ride so they clearly anticipated the comments they would get on the subject. Oddly this short clip is a lot more positive about cycling than the segment on the programme.

  • More interesting was Chris Boardman saying he doesn't ride a bike in London because it is too unpleasant.

I know how he feels. I'm on the cusp of giving it up myself.

  • My god those facebook comments are depressing.

  • On the third showing, they added that they asked Chris why he wasn't wearing a helmet and have posted his response on Facebook.

    @Melsbikes

  • Thanks.

A refreshing perspective, which ignores the usual efficacy mudslinging (that so divides people who have a common cause), taking the heat out of the debate and addresses the real problem.

  • BHIT becomes Cycle-Smart
    http://road.cc/content/news/134927-bicycle-helmet-initiative-trust-becomes-cycle-smart

“More and more children are being encouraged to cycle and whilst we recognise the huge health and environmental benefits of cycling there are also risks involved and Cycle-Smart is committed to highlighting ... those dangers.”

    Lolz

  • Never have I or any other replicants seen a worse mission statement

  • Cycle training in schools sounds like a great idea, gets more kids cycling, and more safely. Is it not positive to see an organisation previously fixated on the single issue of helmets, which may have had the effect of putting people off cycling, now potentially encouraging it?

  • It is not positive to have an organisation focused on actively "dangerising" a relatively safe, beneficial activity.

  • You won't even concede that dropping the small minded emphasis on helmets is a move in the right direction for this organisation? Seems very pessimistic.

  • They haven't dropped anything, just re-branded it and given their agenda a sugar-coating, which is as cynical as it gets: a turd in a doughnut still tastes of shit.

CF New Labour or "religion" becoming "faith".

  • If it's about safety, why does Angie completely ignore car occupants, drivers and pedestrians, all of whom have similar exposure to the risk of TBI? Do these people not count? We're lucky to have Angie on our side, but it's as if everyone else's precious skull is worthless to her.

  • Still glad they're teaching kids cycle training.

CF New Labour or "religion" becoming "faith".

If you've written off the Labour movement or all of religion, probably not surprising you wouldn't give the helmet people a second chance. For me, dialogue and common ground where possible is always preferable.

  • William, they're an industry lobby body, they have a fixed agenda, and they're not going to divert from that in any way whatsoever.

  • Burn them.

  • corporate charities in the U.K.
    theres lots
think about that for a moment

  • BHIT would love to have control of cycle training in schools, which currently is about skills and cycle promotion ie should be fun and empowering. They would use the old egg-drop-experiment:

    "How cool is brain damge?

  • Here's a thought... If charities of all types were successful in solving the cause they're working towards there'd be over 700,000 folks out of work as a result.

  • They'd soon find work though - the back-to-work charities would see to that.

  • Why it makes sense not to wear a helmet
(Maybe a repost but always worth remembering, kids, why not to wear a helmet -unless you're in a car that is )

  • Another balanced and well argued piece: it tackles the usual efficacy argument head-on (#inb4Schick) and then demonstrates how it is a relatively minor consideration.

BUT YOUR BRAINS THO, common sense, once fell off and it saved my life etc etc etc, cont for ten billion gazillion pages and 'news' articles etc

  • Yeah, that too: it's like banging your head against a brick wall (with a helmet though, obvs).

  • Always wear a condom.
