"I would ride in London"
How many of the cyclists killed were breaking the law, Laura? How many of them would've been saved by a helmet?
And... Repeat.
-
• #5004
Seems sensible enough with regard to obeying the rules of the road though.
Yes.

I have not. Just this: http://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/they-weave-inbetween-buses--and-people-wonder-why-they-get-hit-olympic-winner-laura-trotts-attack-on-rogue-cyclists-8791153.html
Why-oh-why did I start reading the comments?

...on par with this thread.

I've gone off Laura Trott, I expect she'll be devastated to hear.

Yet another professional/celebrity cyclist who hasn't got the first idea about cycling in the real world. It sounds like she hasn't actually ever ridden a bike in London (other than in the velodrome of course).
I don't want her as my "cycling ambassador" until she gets a clue and stops victim blaming.
-
• #5009
Alternatively, you could say she's yet another professional cyclist who's been leant on to say something in a bid to persuade the nodders and cat 4 club strava members to stop being muppets, but who hasn't actually had much time to get acquainted with all the nuances of the policy.

accidents were “not always the car’s fault”.
Well, she's right there, accidents are normally the driver's fault.

Car drives into bunch with her sister in it and she focuses on the helmet.
Car drives at her and she focuses on sister's helmet.
http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/public/cyclesafety/article3565876.eceShe's a bit meh.. and I wear helmets!

Might Laura Trott have a commercial relationship with Lazer helmets in the same way that James Cracknell has with Alpina?
-
• #5013
Might Laura Trott be well-meaning but thick? Athletic gifts and intellectual ones rarely correlate.
-
• #5014
Standard poll of should helmet use be compulsory shows 60 odd percent against.

I need a new mtb lid. Where can I get a white POC trabec MIPS helmet significantly cheaper than retail?

She's uninformed rather than 'thick'.
Plenty of supposedly cerebral (see what I did there?) people in non-athletic lifestyles say similar things to her, being likewise uninformed.

It might be rubbish reporting, she may have said loads of positive stuff and a desperate reporter seized upon the contentious stuff. Or, she's a witch, burn her.
-
• #5018
Reporters don't lie, they fabricate the truth...
-

No, they're people you made up that are quite convinced that helmets does not have any benefit.
Helmets have benefit, It's the perception that's the problem.

If you fall into this category may I ask you a question or few? To what extent do you wonder whether evidence will come to light in the future that shows helmets to be beneficial (obviously they will never be proven to be perfect, or the most important factor in cyclist safety)? Would you wear a helmet if the evidence was solid? What is the likelihood of such evidence coming to light, in your opinion (over say the next 10 or 20 years)? How much stronger would the evidence need to be convince you to be pro-compulsion as well as a wearer? I am not assuming that such evidence will come to light by the way, especially on the question of compulsion.
Yes
What?
No
What?

No amount of evidence of benefit would justify compulsion. Even in our communist state, where there might be some small public good if helmets could eliminate 100% of head injuries from cyclists, the total benefit would be trivially small compared with the total cost.

I go away for seven days and what do I return to, 10 pages on the helmet thread? Wtf? I've literally run out if neg and I've only read three of these pages.
Jeez and puppeteer you are both idiots. I am considering setting an alarm to come to this thread and neg each of your posts every day.
If you want to wear helmets fine, but why all this energy for other people... Other people who wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire (only talking from personal experience here).

”I think that there are quite a few people on this thread who are quite convinced about helmets not being of any real benefit and who don't wear helmets as a result.”
Don’t wear a helmet cause I simply don’t like them and whatever the benefit might be, it doesn’t weigh up the discomfort and inconvenience. I don’t care about, nor do I question the potential benefit of wearing a helmet.
”To what extent do you wonder whether evidence will come to light in the future that shows helmets to be beneficial (obviously they will never be proven to be perfect, or the most important factor in cyclist safety)?”
I don’t.
”Would you wear a helmet if the evidence was solid?”
No.
”What is the likelihood of such evidence coming to light, in your opinion (over say the next 10 or 20 years)?”
Don’t know, don’t care.
”How much stronger would the evidence need to be to convince you to be pro-compulsion as well as a wearer?”
That will never happen.

This pic from Ed's post yesterday, is profoundly depressing. Do these people really think this is necessary when you ride a bike?
-
• #5025
Well, it'll stop all those cars that were taken off the road from hitting them.
Close the thread.
