I've had plenty of accidents (mostly with trees, rocks and the ground) and various helmets have probably saved me plenty, though haven't bought one for about 5yrs now. its technically old and a bit on the tight side, time for a replacement....

Met athlon xc ...
http://www.awcycles.co.uk/images/giro/athlonWhtGrn10.jpgyes its an mtb helmet, but tbh I don't ride modern road bikes, and when I do ride on the road I rarely wear a helmet as the greastest danger to me is badly driven cars, and lets face it, if your rear ended by a grannie at 50mph (nearly happened twice now) there ain't going to be enough of you left for a helmet to even begin to protect. mtb is for mtb and road when its 'required' for events etc.

Ed, I say this with great feeling, why don't you just fuck off?
Sorry no can do, I'm too 'superior' to listen to you.

Ed, Day-Moe has a valid point mainly because you're an expert of nothing but give advice to all.
Oh, and Day-Moe would be on a Shetland pony at best.
Don't bother answering as your on ingnore.

Helmet.

I'm worried that this fascinating and informative topic may sink from the front page, so i thought i'd bump it a bit with facts; I bought a helmet the other day but before i got to ride with it on i kicked a suitcase and broke my little toe. True anecdote. You can't argue with that.

Saw the crash on Sunday that Damn-Oh mentioned somewhere on the forum. Big impact to helmet, protecting the temporal lobe area. The material had cracked all the way through in 2 places, compressed by the impact, but still held together by the 'matrix' inside the polystyrene.
For the record, the injuries sustained did not include concussion or the onset of temporal lobe epilepsy (as happened to a friend who hit his head in the same place).
Watch out BMMF, you'll be accused of violating someone's human rights or some such cobblers.
The morning "crash" also resulted in a broken helmet/unbroken head scenario.
Must be some sort of crazy coincidence. Or possibly Voodoo.

Angry tags!
I don't think helmets should be compusory but I do encourage people I care about to wear them. Weird huh.

My wife's friend's 4-year-old ended up in A&E recently after sustaining a head injury. He tripped and fell into a doorframe… whilst running through the house to fetch his helmet before going out for a ride :/
Anyway, I'm still wearing mine full-time on the bike now. FACT.

Maybe. Straight up punning got tired a long way back. Is recognizing them your new hobby?

It might be easier to tell people to wear gloves on a bike. Especially if they're riding a hybrid/mtb with rubber grips. Looking at the damage to my mits after a 10mph crash I'm lucky to have been wearing them. Also they offer some padding when you're forced to beat on a cars window.
Also showing people how to wear a helmet properly might be a better idea than getting people who don't want to wear a helmet to wear one. A helmet worn properly looks 10x better so removes the argument that you look like a knob when you wear one.

No it doesn't. It just makes you look 10x less of a knob than before.

^repost,
but the reason I came here today is because as I left the house earlier I was admonished by a visiting family member for setting off on my bike, without a helmet.
A moment after I left he turned and struck his head on the garage door, receiving a nasty cut to the head, and concussion. My partner came out and found him sitting on the doorstep, covered in blood and repeating the same thing every 45 seconds or so, which revolved around my safety, "I hope he is alright without a helmet on"
He seemed completely oblivious to his own injury.
Moral? always wear a helmet if you want to protect your head, but don't victimise cyclists who don't unless you do while doing everything else. -

After 5 years I wore a helmet on the commute for the first time today (prompted by the gf after watching the Senna film, I did point out he was wearing a helmet...). Wasn't as awful as I feared, but did keep catching my reflection looking like Toad out of Super Mario.
Ed, I say this with great feeling, why don't you just fuck off?
