Are people telling you to take off your helmet? No.
How would you feel about compulsory helmet laws being introduced?
He did allude to it here:
The fact I wear a helmet and don't understand why people are so anti them does not mean I want them to be compulsory or would ever tell someone to wear a helmet (though I might encourage them to do so).

I am finally getting it... this thread is only partly about ... about ...
This thread is just a catch-all to dump all the helmet debates in that most experienced cycle forumers (whatever their views) are sick of so that they don't end up cluttering the forum.

damn straight.
though the Pegoretti (apparently a 56) is weirdly a little large.
I think I should test it out further after exams.Just another shoddy 'retti build.
You should've bought some Taiwanese carbon. Lighter and faster too. -

As I believe I have stated, I would be completely against it. Surely that should be dscussed in the 'should bicycle helmets be compulsory thread' though?
I am finally getting it... this thread is only partly about the effectiveness of cycling helmets and whether or not people should wear them; it is mainly about emphasing the lack of conclusive evidence in order to reduce the likelihood of laws to make helmets compulsory.
So if no one is telling you to wear one and no one is telling you not to wear one, what are you doing in here?

YouTube - [0-60] Ken Block's snowboard/rally bit from DC's Mtn.Lab 1.5
I had a point. But after watching that I couldn't give a fuck.
Oh yeah... I wear a helmet snowboarding, the first time I fell wearing one, I was riding on the flat slowly, trying to spin on my tail. The snow was like rock and I was glad I had a helmet. The second time I stacked it off a jump and wiped out hard, hitting my head a few times. Recently I hit my head and the helmet wasn't on tight enough. It really hurt and it hurt my neck too.
On my bike I flipped over my bars once and hit my head without a helmet, and it hurt, but my knee hurt more and I'm still alive.
If I'm riding outside london fast down a hill on a road bike I feel less comfortable without a helmet on. This may also be because I'm getting more scared of things as I get older.
That is all. Carry on.

If it was my forum this thread would be locked and any mention of h_lm_t that wasn't purely technical would be deleted without question. Lucky it's not my forum.

A cycling forum isn't a cycling forum without a helmet debate thread.
Or is it…?

My only real concern is 'why is there such an anti helmet agenda... leave me in peace to wear a helmet and protect myself from pain when I next land on my head'
There isn't a big anti-helmet agenda, there's an absolutely fucken huge stop-wasting-our-time-with-the-same-old-arguments beef.

Risk assessment, it's all about them risk assessment.
My risk assessment tell me that my commute (back then when it was 10 miles each way) wasn't deemed risky enough to required the used of helmet.
However, when I go MTBing with a couple of mates in Surrey, my risk assessment tell me that a helmet may be idea due the higher risk of falling over/flipping over the bar.
If someone ask me which they should spend £40 on, Cycle Training or a helmets, I'll strongly encourage them to go for Cycle Training and worry about helmets later.

Ed, though I don't give a flying fuck whether you ride a helmet or not, Actively advising people, in a bike shop, to not buy a helmet is stupid, and actually quite irresponsible.
I'm going to put it this way:
If there's even a chance that a helmet will prevent you from brain injury- it is worth taking that chance, 'cos frankly, for all the Cycle Training in the world, a small fall off your bike onto you're head by a random unavoidable incident, or freak mis-clip, etc, MAY change your world irrevocably.TO advise someone to NOT buy a helmet for me is inexcusable.
This opinion is much like my opinion on religions- I don't give a fuck what you believe, but if you're trying to suggest those beliefs on me, or other people, I won't like it.

I would recommend that you read this:

It is also irresponsible to sell someone a helmet by claiming that they offer anything more than low level protection against low speed falls. The seller should also explain that if wearing a helmet gives the cyclist confidence to ride a few mph faster, or to try tricks they wouldn't do without a helmet then the net benefit is zero.
I have also heard shop assistants in London lie about helmets being compulsory just to get a sale.
I am not sure which of the above is worse. -

Have you seen the typical London cyclist? It would be like trying to train a banana.
Safer to cover them in cushions.

But that is clearly barking madness, so we'll discount that.

I also said worry about the helmets later; so they can decided whether they need one or not after cycle training.
I hate to says it but in all seriousness, have you had cycle training H?
At work, when a customer asked if they need a helmets, I always said the exact same thing; it's entirely up to them, if they feel they needed one, fine, if not, no problem.
if pressed further, I'd recommend cycle training if they're worried about riding on the road.
it's such a shame that my shop ditch their cycle training scheme (not enough money in it) as it would've been great to encourage customer to try out cycle training (originally free with new bike).
(Charlie, I've had customer who think helmet is standard here, an alarming number of them).
