• Norman wisdom sees lots of things, most of which are not real.

    Completely

  • fair enough, perhaps I am an old ARSE but with age comes wisdom. I'll bow to your better knowledge and back down now.

with age CAN come wisdom. Some people start with less and then gain a bit but may never match those with a higher level to start with.

This settles it for me and pictures don't lie
    you can't make an omlette...

  • Can't believe omletting myself ride without a helmet.

  • It's œufious once you've had it eggsplained ova and ova with an albumen full of pictures.

  • This thread's been scrambling for some puns.

  • What exactly is that poster trying to shell us? "Your head's strength is analagous to that of an uncooked egg"? come on, who hatched that one... must be having a quail of a time.

  • You know what the problem with this test?

    the dummy is inanimated.

You're right, without accounting for the effect that flapping your arms and yelling "OH FUCK" has, we'll never know if that inflatable space helmet is any good.

  • If I ever saw someone wearing that helmet it would be way too tempting not to punch them in the back of the head just to see it inflate.

  • Actually you're precisely right.

When you go over the bar, your natural reflex would be covering your head in an 'OH FUCK' manner, whether the video just show the dummy simply flinging over the bar as if he's diving in the water.

Would also point out that the most common injuries are collarbones (as many forumeangrr found out).

  • ever gone over the bars Ed?
the natural reaction is to put your arms out. (well that's what i did the numerous times i have gone over the bars)

  • Ed's never attained a speed high enough to get OTB*.

To save you googling it, that's "Over The Bars", Ed.

    That's your natural response.

Ninja's naturally go into a shoulder roll.

  • Well I've done exactly that and I did not put my hands out or flail or cover my head, I didn't react at all because it happened so fast and landed on my face splitting my nose open and my forehead. I was wearing a helmet at the time but it did fuck all, bastard thing didn't have a scratch. The dummy in the test looks like he would of had a bit of face scrapage as well.

  • the natural reaction is to put your arms out.

Which is what breaks your collar bone - the load travels up your straight arm and snaps the clavicle.

  • yup, when I did an induction at meadowbank one of the first things they taught us was 'fuck, tuck, roll' so you shit it, the get into a tuck position and then roll with it.

  • I've gone over the bars and ninja rolled (several times).
I've gone over the bars and landed on my face (several times).
I've gone over the bars and volted, landing on my feet (several times).
I've gone over the bars and landed on my back (several times).
I've gone over the bars and and stuck my arm out, locking it and doing something to my elbow that resulted in me being unable to move said arm for a week or so. Very painful.
I've gone over the bars and landed on the side of my face (again).
I've gone over the bars and landed on my face slid down a hill with my leg coming back over my head, I thought I was going to break my neck, it hurt alot.
I've gone over the bars and landed on my face and ended up in hospital with concussion feeling quite bad.

I've gone over the bars a lot, twice drunk but mainly sober. I've never covered my head as I fell.

    YMMV.

I need todo some more cycling that involves going over the bars.

  • The face is usual not very painful, plus it's given me chiselled [strike]good[/strike] looks.

  • That's your natural response.

    +1

all it takes to learn this lesson is to land on your face once :)

Have you thought of getting a balaclava?
