• there's a homeless guy I see on my work-route who rides and old raleigh 3-spd wearing a pith helmet, I hope I am that cool when I get that old.

  • I've had a hospitalization crash from riding a fixie (like an idiot) without a helmet. I wore it for the first few times i rode round london but then you start forgetting and before you know it its under your bed. And nothing ever comes out from under your bed.

  • Just another remider....

    ...ouch.

  • I always was 65% against them, but actually the fyxomatosis story made me change my mind
And I got one ! I still think ALL helmets look sh1t especially with my 60cm troll head !
But vanity is a capital sin and I do not cycle for appearance ..much

You ride a lot, you ride fast you want to stay clear of NHS me thought ....Me bought a helmet

  • well done. Lets hope more ppl follow suit.

BTW I also have a huge head. Sucks.

  • When I was 15 I went face first into a Volvo at about 65 km/h. Doesnt matter how good you are, you cannot predict what all drivers will do. I've worn a lid since. It's law hre anyway. Good move because anyone who is under 25 doesn't know any dfferent now.

  • It should be law here too Wisey, I crashed on the way home tonight, wheels went from underneath me when overtaking a bus, smacked my helmet on the floor with enough force to smash it, if it had been my bare head I would at least be in hospital now, maybe in the morgue. Thing is I wasn't even turning sharply, no drain covers, no idea why it happened and it happened so quickly that I couldn't even put a hand out or anything. It has really made me think of the very rare occassion when I don't wear it, to the point where there will no longer be rare occassions like that. Brain injury is not fun by all accounts.

  • Gotta agree completely with the Pascals Wager comparison. Even after a crash with a hgv, I wasn't into the idea of having a helmet out of the principle of having no tight-rope walkers safety net and that. Been wearing one every day since I saw those pictures of the fella at the beginning of this thread though. Can't really imagine being able to accomplish much with a full rig like that sticking out of me.

  • I;ve had three major(ish) crashes in the last year. non hospitalising but definitely bruising and bleeding with the exeption of the last one which, although righting off my bike, left me completely unscathed - i just slid off the bonnet onto my feet. after each crash i start wearing a helmet again but then get lazy and don;t bother. one time, after denting the back of a van with my head, i went through a phase of wearing a full face helmet... slightly for a laugh but also i thought it just looked cool. gets well fucking hot so i screwed that idea pretty quickly. I reckon this weekend i'm going to get a bmx helmet - they make me look less like a shroomie.

  • After 10 years riding around the city without a helmet I dug out my old lid from when I used to mountain bike and wore it on my commute today, it felt surprisingly good. Anyway my reason for this is after re-reading about Andy from Fyxomatosis crash. http://www.fyxomatosis.com/news.php?readmore=942
I previously reasoned not wearing a helmet based upon this article http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/09/060911102200.htm
Having just become a father I seem to have gained a little more interest in self-preservation. Anyone, Bueller??
    Cheers
