Think this helmet look clunky. When are they going to design a helmet that doesn't make you look like a knob-end? It's not brain science ... well ... maybe it is.

my response to DfTPublicity@dft.gsi.gov.uk
Please read your own second paragraph and realise that the statistics don't actually make sense or contribute to a coherent argument:
*"there are still on average thirty seven road safety child casualties each week in the UK."*
children on foot or on bikes hit by cars, or just tripping up on the pavement? what proportion are on bicycles?
"Our aim is to continue to reduce child road deaths and injuries and to ensure that correct and safe road behaviour is something that children learn and remember throughout their childhood and into their teenage years and beyond"
so explain how smashing kids on the head with a hammer to get points does this?
"According to the Road Casualties Great Britain 2007 Annual Report, children (aged 5-15) account for 20% of all Pedal Cyclist KSI’s"
??? what correlation does this have on the first statistic? (clue: the answer is none). Presuming a KSI is an accicent (you don't explain, it could be anything), how many actual children are you talking about?*"This makes children a highly vulnerable group" *
where's the logic for this? How do you arrive at this conclusion?"and it is for this reason that the DfT would like to communicate with both children and parents about the importance of cycle safety and cycle training (through Bikeability)."
Great. So teach them to smash each other over the head with hammers.I could go on but instead I'll just repeat what I have already said:
"One outcome of the emphasis in recent years on cycle helmets and head injuries has been to brand cycling as an inherently hazardous activity, with a particularly high risk of head injury.
In fact, this is untrue. Everyday cycling, like walking, is a low-risk activity, and one where the health benefits outweigh the risk of injury by around 20:1. The bottom line is that people who cycle regularly live longer, on average, than people who do not, with healthier lives and less illness. This cannot possibly mean that cyclists are especially vulnerable to life-threatening head injury.
In England the number of children each year who experience serious head injury when cycling is no more than about 500 – out of a population of 6 million children who cycle frequently. Few of these injuries are life-threatening. The risk of head injury is little more than the average for all activities and significantly less than for pedestrians.Safe though cycling is, the best proven way to improve the safety of cycling further is through the encouragement of more people to cycle – risk decreases by a third as cycle use doubles. Cycle helmet promotion and laws, on the other hand, discourage cycle use and thereby decrease safety."

Very good, fred. Well done!

Well you could get the hardhat version. ...In my opinion though in summer you are not gonna be comfortable in something which isnt well vented.I've tried riding in a skate lid and it sucks. I dunno, it just seems a bit daft - I would either get a proper helmet or not bother. I think that those Bern ones make you look more silly than if you just got a proper bike helmet.
Yup, if you're going to wear a helmet, just get a proper one and stop being embarrassed of it. Cheap helmets always look bad and are false economy anyway, either don't wear one at all or just get a more expensive from giro or something.

Has anyone tried any clothing or equipment with D3o in it? This stuff looks like the future of light, flexible, urban cycling armour...

And given the threads I've been reading during No Indicating Week, I reckon we should all get some very soon..!!!

I wear a helmet about 50% of the time...
-
• #1242
So you leave the house with it on and by the end it's off again? Where do you keep it?
-
• #1243
5 minutes on, 5 minutes off.
I never wear my helmet off the bike. Thats weird.
-
• #1244
I wear one everytime I ride my bike. It's some fancy Specialized one.
Something to do with the law stating I have to wear one, or maybe that I don't want to split my head open because of fuckwit drivers.
Make your own choice.

Or a plate of it across the palm and down the wrist a bit, so in a spill, it acts like skateboard gloves and stops you breaking the heel of your hand by distributing the force? Elbow pads and shoulder pads in a long-sleeved cycling top? Knee pads in your 3/4 shorts? Etc. etc.
OK, it isn't going to save your life maybe, having knee pads, but if it makes taking a spill a bit less damaging, I'd buy some...

• #1247
Oh shit, where's it going to stop?
I have visions of nosy fuckwits no longer yelling 'you should be wearing a helmet you know', but instead 'you should be wearing full body armour you know!!' -

Richard Cheese speaks true. Passive safety is a bit daft(er) when you don't have an engine to cart it about.

I wrap myself in clingfilm this offers me all the protection I need.
It's aero too.

I seem to remember Rector having problems with these in the 80's because the design simply transferred the force half way up your arm, breaking that instead.
thats battle star galatica all over! if it comes with an hands free flip down mic i am in there
