nice simple raliegh
horizontal dropouts
should be a problem at allI'd start by reading through the forum and sheldon brown's site. You should be able to find all the information you need.

Ok mmccarthy, some of you are nice and kind! Thank for being friendly and helpful. I thought thats why people have forums.

You'll get plenty of good advice here unless you start insulting people or ask obvious questions. My advice would be to go check out Sheldon Brown's site and read up on the relevant stuff there, if there's still things you need explained ask here. Too many new guys ignore that and end up getting into petty arguments which kind of ruins the whole idea of getting help.

Fair enough, I still think people could be kind.

What are you on about? You had 3 helpful comments within a few minutes without even a swear word. Were you expecting a complimentary BJ with your first new thread?

I think Hippy only honours this, if its an original thread that doesnt warrant merging.

Would this frame make a good fixie conversion?
If you were me where could you start?
I would like to repray the frame black. Thanks
Brentdont destroy that. new saddle and redo the bars and take off the plastic thingy by the rear mech and you got yourself a nice bike.
-
• #337
Yes don't respray, the paint looks tidy and is cool colour scheme.
It's not quite a puppy i reckon but we about to witness a slaying...

Exactly.
Kind is merging your very commonly asked question with others so you have all that wonderful information in one place to read.
Kind is getting to know a place before having a cry about the people within it.
Kind is offering blow jobs for the.. hangon a minute..

Right all gears are off, left the front 2 chain rings on now as well as the back cassette until i've chosen the right gear (and haven't got the tool to remove front, so will leave that to the bike shop). Shortened the chain and went for the test ride, but the chain is pulling the wheel along the dropout. they're horizontal, but forward facing. Read the sheldonbrown artical on chain tension etc, but not making as much sense as I'd hoped. Anything in laymen's terms would be handy!
Thanks, Dan.

Your nuts aren't tight enough. Also, is the chain straight?
-
• #341
Could dan use one of those Dicta BMX singlespeed freewheels on his bike or are they for use with 1/8 chains and therefore unsuitable unless he uses a compatible chainring?
-
• #342
you can use a 1/8 freewheel with a 3/32 chainring and a 1/8 chain.
-
• #343
I have quick-release on the back at the moment, is this not advisable? Don't reckon the chain is straight as it's also wanting to jump up a gear at the moment, so not really rideable until i have a single cassette on the back? I'd like to keep the largest chainring on the front, but will remove the smaller one.
Thanks!

You can use a QR but yours is either not up to the task or you're not doing it up tight enough. Personally I wouldn't use one but Sheldon would (he suggested the steel Shimano ones not the lighter versions).
You also need to sort the chainline out. A crooked chain will wear out very quickly or, as you've found out, slip. Usually when you need to take off quickly which will result in balls meets top tube = no fun.

• #345
Haha! yeah not really wanting that, I've done the QR as tight as humanly possible, but its still giving in so gonna need that swapped too I guess. Think i'll get myself down to a workshop my mate is helping at in elephant for bits I need...
Cheers

Cool,
here's where I'm at so far, fixed the sliding QR with a new one so all's working great at the moment. Still need to remove the front inner chainring and finish up the back but loving having it SS. The other bits can wait for a couple weeks, but would like to find some stubby metal mudguards for it, any ideas?

**Hey there,
Let me give you a little bit of background first, I've been into bikes for ever but I've never had a fixie before it's always been mountain bikes. I've bought a 1985 12 speed tourer with a reynolds 531 frame and fork, which I intend to do up to be a beater bike. The worst piece of damage is on the drive train with the outer front ring being chipped and having teeth missing. The way I see it I have two choices to fix this bike up I can either replace the drive train and the wheels or I can bodge the drive train to work in a single speed or fixed gear way.
I'm leaning towards the first solution because I can then have a flipflop hub, I've pretty much decided on halo aero rage wheelset because they suit my budget, so firstly how do I work out which type of cog do I need? (I really can't find this on google or here maybe I'm stupid and I've missed something really basic)
secondly can anybody recomend a cheap front ring?
