  • Ah yes, it was even in this thread. Should have searched. :)

  • Witcomb Trading still listed as active at companies house. Hope it stays that way, was waiting to send the '64 back to them for a refurb and also wanted a copy of the original order from "The book"

  • Shit- just seen this on the forum! It was I who was the rumor maker Skully spoke of! Had my Witcomb resprayed by Mario couple of months back and he said Barry was doing repairs for him at the moment- he also got my new decals off Barry.

I'm such a nob- cycle past the old shop all the time and seen Barry going in a couple of times around February- had a very brief set of hello's but never more- Should have pinned him down about what was going on. At that time there was still a load of frames/ lugsets/ tubes in the front of the shop, to think that any of that in a Lewisham scrap yard is heart breaking.

Going to give Mario a call on Monday and see if I can track down Barry- just starting a community bike workshop in the arches in Deptford (including some frame building) and was hoping Barry could come down and grace us with some wisdom.

Will report back if i get anywhere with it.

  • Any joy, Knowthejo......
    Good luck with the workshop........

  • Hi:

I am deperate to contact Barrie (Barry) Witcomb or the business (WITCOMB Cycles) to renovate my wonderful 1969 Witcomb track machine (built by Barrie in April 1969 at their Deptford premises).

The bike now resides with me here in Mumbai, INDIA but I am willing to send it (bring it along) to the UK - but I first need to contact Barrie or his dad Ernie. Does ANYONE know whether they are still involved with Witcomb Cycles or the cycle business at all ? I am rather desperate and any and all help will be highly appreciated - ideally, even a phone no. or email for Barrie would be great for me to contact him from here in Mumbai.

I hope to hear from someone on LFGSS - meanwhile, stay safe and Bike Power !!!

    Kind regards,

    Ronnie K. Marker

  • there are quite a few companies up and down the country that could do a sympathetic refurbishment for you if you have no joy finding the witcombs. most transfers are readily available.

Ronnie, Barrie Witcomb is still around, but the company seems to have disappeared. I'm afraid I don't have contact details for him. Some people on here know him, though. Was there no information anywhere in this thread?

  • Not much of an update, the trading address has been changed from Tanners Hill ??

  • vello has witcombarry update. i'll ask him to post on the thread.

  • Not much info though, was talking to Knowthejo recently, so was Skully, and he said he was in touch with Barrie. Apparently Barrie is still doing collaborations with other people in the cycle business (Ron Cooper, Colourtech). Best thing would be to get Knowthejo to tell us about this...

  • I know hellomiles has a friend who's in contact with Mr Cooper, had a frame built for him too! Lucky sod. I expect Barrie is knocking out hetchins's as we speak...

  • I have pictures of the finished frame somewhere! Will put them in current projects as soon as I find them. I actually have Ron's number as well...

  • As an owner of a Witcomb track bike, I just find the fact that the shop has now gone is sad.

The fact that the shop was cleared out to a scrap metal merchant is just criminal.

  • I now consider myself extremely lucky to have had my Witcomb frame fully restored by Barry at the WITCOMB shop in Deptford a couple of years ago. It is superb - he did a fantastic job and I shall treasure it even more now. I remember going to collect it at the shop - meeting and chatting to Barry and his father Ernie. Barry was able to look the frame number up in old workshop log book of all frames made by the firm. He was able to tell me it was a Giro d'italia model and was made in 1967 .
It is indeed a sad story that the business has closed - for what ever reason. And it would be good if somebody could try to resurrect the name again and build good steel Witcomb frames for another 50 years.

  • This explains why I couldn't find any info when I wanted them to renovate my frame. Sent many emails but never had one returned. The guys at Argos in bristol did it in the end and made a fantastic job. Bugger though.

  • I have happy memories of going to Whitcombs in the early 90s. It was fantastic.

I'm a friend of the people who bought the building. I saw everything that was there before the clearance was done. The clearance was undertaken by Whitcomb people, not the new owner. My understanding is that not everything was to go to the skip. There were some nice things, but a lot that looked less interesting close up than from affar. It's quite possible that most of what was practically worth saving was saved.

  • Including Tim's stem that he left there, maybe!

  • Crying inside.

We looked at taking the shop over as Union Cycling Works - but alas its turning into flats.

  • Shame. :(

  • If they paint over the details on the front they should be punished.

  • hear, hear.
