well the 46 16 is like 77 inches, which I think is quite high...dropping it to a 46 17 won't leave me spinning like a madman I think...and also sometimes you want to ride hard in which case you might need to skid (if riding brakeless)...and also skidding can be fun hehe...so yeah, I need to drop it so I can skid without hurting me knees...but as I said in my post above, it made me ride more leisurely this morning and I liked that, so maybe I will want to skid less anyways...

fair enought...it seems our take on riding fixed is different.i like to ride fast and cover alot of distance with which i feel i need a high gear and i have a break so i dont need a low gear for skidding....the gearing i am one at the mo is good for track standing!

what gear is that? i'm using 48*16 and have no probs skidding but trackstands are still on the agenda..

yeah, I think I would stick with my gear as it is if I was covering lots of distance and/or had a brake...might just get a couple sprockets on my new wheels so I have gear options...

aidan i find the old leg over the bar skid really useful on the commute home from uni...
You might see someone bent over who's primed for a kick in the arse and for that the "one leg over the bar skid" is an invaluable skill.

i went from a 52/16 to a 42/16.....theres a certain point i get to where i can go any faster....my legs wont go round that fast!!!

Can someone explain skipping to me? Is it just like a skid but with the back wheel unweighted enough to let it bounce about a bit?

I def have a preferd foot forward but have no problems skidding left foot forward. I find it invaluable when slowing down fast so that I can skip (which slows you down faster) and flick the back out either side with each skid, you can really scrub off speed quickly when you're side ways, either by skidding effectivly or ending up on the ground, then your skin has really good grip on the road to slow you down. :)

there would be no point in that, you are trying to slow down. The maximum friction between two surphace exicst just before slipage. When you are skidding you have significantly less grip and hence friction. So you want to try and keep the wheel just off of skidding, When skipping I personaly resist untill I skid abit let go alittle then skid again, repeat. Each skid tends to be on a different foot forward. You do NOT want your rear wheel comming off the ground as you will not be slowwing!

Yeah belt sanders get clogged up easily with wood and it looks like a freshly skinned pavement

you skid by locking up your left leg at the lowest point in the pedals revolution. Then when your right foot comes to 3 o'clock you pull up on your right foot. Throughout this whole time you put your weight over the front wheel. That's what I've been told and when I do the footwork just liek that it works. You use it to slow down if you don't have brakes. Also just because it's a fun thing to do and a skill that's only relevant in fixed gear.
