Right leg doesn't do much after skids

  • So yesterday I was practicing skidding for the first time. I'm not that great at it but I've got the technique. When I got in my left leg has full mobility but my right leg can't raise of a certain angle. When I thrust it up it just falls back down as if it's dead. anyone have any ideas what it could be?

  • Unless there happens to be a doctor or physio on this forum, I'd make an appointment with a relevant professional!

  • Yeah take it easy on the skids for a whiele you can pull your kness bad especially if your legs are not acustomed to the force. Look after your knees!

  • sounds very odd. is it painful? swollen? if not, it could be possessed. go to the doctor. if that doesn't help, burn some sage.

  • It's not swollen and not more painful than normal after a commute to work. I'll leave the skids for a while now until I get a larger cog. I'm running 48x16 right now and I'm swapping the 16T cog for a 17T cog. If that's not light enough I'll get a 19T.

On slilent witness (yes I am boaring) last week there was some guy in Dalston who was a whitch doctor, maybe he could help?

48:16 is a really hard gear to skid anyway, let alone when u are first learning..... I used 48:20 when I taught myself, then , once u get it u can skid any gear (within reason)

  • Yeah I managed to force some semi-decent skids out so I think I may have just over done it.

  • i taught myself on 49:15, then you can skid in any gear... .

  • Are your legs like trees?

  • hehe same thing happened to me exactly.. try pushing down with your back leg a bit more, but essentially you're just using muscles that you've probably never used before. In about 2 days you'll be able to move your leg again, keep trying but go easy on your leg, eventually the muscle will be able to take it.

  • I've never used most of my muscles before :P

  • I ride 46 and 16...its too high and I am in the process of having wheels built and getting a lower gear...I can skid it no problem and it is the gear that I have always ridden since I started riding fixed about a year and a couple months ago...but recently I have noticed that my right knee, though not painful, is a little stressed out...so I have decided not to do skids and skips until I get my new wheels...it was nice this morning as it made me ride at a really nice leisurely pace and my knees are definitely more chilled out right now...oops, gotta bounce! but yeah, get a lower gear and take care of those knees!

    Peace

  • I had exactly the same thing after the first time I went out practicing skids (but with my left, I skid left foot forward). Hasnt come back since though!

  • fc9k ...I went out practicing skids (but with my left, I skid left foot forward)....

That's cool.... I wonder how many people skid with their left foot forwards first? U don't see many... Anyone an ambidextrous skidder? i.e. skid with either foot forwards?

  • i can't. i think my right leg is actually stronger...or maybe it's a psychological thing.

your going to drop the gear even more just to skid?..what happened to riding a bike..i recently changed my chainring from a 52 to a 42(for polo) with a 16t sproket..now i am spinning like a idiot!

yeah, broke my foot a couple of months ago and still had to ride brakeless, so i started doing it left foot first, now i can skid right and left, amazing for slowing down and for when you're on the wrong stroke and someone walks out in front of you

  • for me spinning is good on 165 cranks, i find myself lowering the gear ratio to spin more. i ride 48:19 now (my track frame is in the works.... again) and it feels great. if you're learning how to skid so you can ride brakeless i find skip stops more effective and they hurt your knees less.

jon: i skid with left foot forwards and my right foot pushes the pedals at the back and it works very well

Yeah I ride 48:19 now as well - love the spinnyness. Went back to 48:17 t'other day just to see what it was like. I didn't like it at all.

One thing for me is that I am a red light stopper, so really like having the lower gear for all of those standing starts.

  • I ride 48- 17 and find it very very tough to skid without leaning so far forwards that I look like a bearded twat trying to audition to be the "Spirt of Ecstasy" off of a Rolls Royce.

I could paint my self silver and make a mint in Covent Garden.

Any tips? Also ride cut down teeny tiny fakenger flat bars…..don’t know if that makes a difference….but I ride clip less which I know makes a difference….

  • shouldn't 42x17 be quite easy? I noticed that I only get it right when I fully lock my left leg. I'm always tempted to bend it when I pull up with the right but whenever I do that I don't skid.

It really makes a difference doesn't it..... My only problem is that it's tempting me to go brakeless.... In my head it's fine, but in practice not as fine as my head thinks! I can do a brakless ride to just bomb around, but for a proper ride.... it hurts my brain trying to concentrate ;-p

  • I'm riding brakeless right now but I'm going slow when there's junctions ahead. There's no traffic here so I don't need to worry that much about hitting things. Toppled at the lights today but that was because I couldn't get a clip out and I'm not great at trackstands in the real world yet (can do about 2 minutes in my flat watching TV but only about 20 seconds on the roads). I've got cable and a lever. Just need to buy my brake.

    hahaha i like that...

i don't find it too hard to skid on a 48:17... the bars do make a difference. it's hard to keep the bike straight with tiny bars.

42:17 is almost a polo gear so will be dead easy you can easily do leg over handlebar skids with that gear i'm sure!
