  • Not sure if people still use this as the last post was back in Jan - but its worth a shot.

Im new in Brighton, only lived here a couple of weeks. Been riding fixed for a few years but never really ventured into Polo or Racing as there were only 4 fixed riders in my home town...

Anyway just a quick hello, i dont really know anyone in Brighton other than my housemates who don't ride. Would be really nice to meet some other riders and maybe try my hand at some polo!

I'm out on my bike most nights after work and have seen a few fixies locked up around town but no one riding yet! As i said, only lived here a couple of weeks and dont really know my way around - i usually end up at the seafront. But hey, maybe you guys can show me the good spots to ride! If you spot me out on my bike, give me a shout, i'm pretty lanky and ride a dark green fixie with drops and odd wheels...

    Sam

  • Hey Sam,

I ride road mainly main but s/s a lot as well, gimme a shout if your up for a ride, always good riding with new peeps.

    James

  • hi, i live in worthing and ride a fixed gear custom. It got stolen, but some nice guy found it and posted on here and gumtree and i got it back. it's currently out of action but i am due to have a new bike in september so will get back on the road.
i would be up for a ride out of work hours, night or weekends.

  • Hey guys, I'm Jake. I live in Lewes and ride a few different bikes.

I'm looking to buy a lo-pro, but this is my fixie at the moment.

I also have an old steel bianchi.

  • There are fixie-styled beers at the Basket Makers (12 Gloucester Road Brighton, East Sussex BN1 4AD) tonight from 6ish until at least one Gary pint after 7pm.

Come down and chat shit about spoks.

  • well i may be keen to pop along, am riding a bike back from rotting dean so dont no what time we be

  • Does anyone have a Bryton rider 50 os? My boss at the Shakespeare's head is interested in buying one and was wanting a look at one in the flesh before dropping £200+ on one, alternatively does anyone know anywhere in Brighton that sells them?

  • Evans sold them when I was there, not sure if they still do though. However, my experience was that they just dont even come close to a Garmin Edge

  • that would be because they don't.

  • Morning all. So... flipped my back wheel yesterday so now officially riding fixed. Happy bunny. !!

Riding a second-hand Subway Zero (don't judge me) but after being on it a couple weeks am really enjoying riding SS/FG. Will probably play around with it a bit (cut down handlebars, get some clips, learn how to actually ride one of these things) but can already see I'm gonna want a new bike before the year's out.

Without rambling, just wondering if people still meet in a local pub - even after the hours spent lurking on various forums, still have a shedload of questions.

    Couple to start off with:

    1. How do I know if my chain's too tight? After flipping the back wheel it feels tighter than I remember it (and I had to adjust the brakes). How much slack (if any) should there be?

    2. Horizontal/Diagonal Restraps? Any experience? Got nothing on the pedals atm but desperately want something. Just don't think clips and straps are work for my skinny ass feet.

    3. Anybody know if Cranks have a pipecutter? Hacksawed down the handlebars a little (to 50cm - the Zero handlebars were massive). Wanna go down a bit more (46cm?) but want a cleaner cut.

    Cheers for any help,
    Rob

  • HI Rob
Chain Adjust - lift back wheel and spin cranks slowly - look at the chain there is always a tight spot due to tolerances etc. see where the chain is tightest by pushing down in the middle and feeling the tension (care ! don't get finger caught in the chain !) When u find the tightest spot, stop the wheel rotation and note the crank position. Now adjust the chain in this position (at it's tightest) - if you adjust it at a loose spot it will be too tight at the tight spot. Undo the wheel nuts, pull back the wheel centrally till the chain is tight - there should be a total of 1 inch movement possible if you try to move the centre of the chain up or down with your fingers. When happy with the amount of play in the chain, tighten wheel nuts. Spin the cranks and recheck the tension. Done !
ref Straps - i recommend you have some form of foot retension on a fixie !! i have used toe clips and straps which are fine, i have no knowledge on just straps as i only use SPDs.
    pipecutter is better.
