  • hosepipe, i agree with you on trying to build one's own bike but i really don't understand why you need to sound so hostile. have you actually met the guys yourself? they're all really nice people and what's wrong with trying to make some money providing a service that a lot of people wouldn't be able/dare to do themselves? from your point of view it sounds like you want all bike mechanics on the planet sacked or even all bike shops going bust.

being able to find that solution on the net in 5 secs doesn't mean you get to sort out the problem in 5 secs. and not everyone knows what they are really searching for. it also doesn't make any sense for someone to shell out for a headset tool or some b.b. tools if they're just building ONE bike. tools aren't cheap.

also, bike part prices on ebay have rocketed sky high. aren't those sellers captalising on the same thing as well? aren't BLB doing the same on an even bigger scale?

  • hosepipe if you "don't have lots of spare time" why take up cycling as a hobby ? that's ridiculus. you'll be needing some spare time to cycle your bike!

i've got fishfingers beans and chips for tea.

i cycle to SAVE myself some time, don't you know that it's the quickest way round london town?

  • your right hosepipe. I was gonna go get cheap £150 music all-in-one system but you've convinced me to buy seperates. probably take me 100x as long, buti have all the time in the world to persue my new hobby.

    thanks.

Is this assuming that everyone who gets a new bike is new to cycling?

Edit - Missed your post Hippo :)

  • Took me 6 months of net based research/bargain hunting/assistance to complete my recent build, and that's bearing in mind I'm at a computer for all of my working day and most evenings.
Plus I wanted to learn all this stuff, and I had the luxury of a bike I enjoyed in the meantime.
Had I wanted to get up and riding straight away on something well built using decent (hard to source) components (ie utilising someone else's knowledge/skills/tools/time) then I have no doubt that paying someone to build you a bike is a great idea.

    me like that :p

  • I'm I gonna have to hand out some fatboy justice?

  • If it involves booze/drugs/watching girls fight, I'm in.

(From one custard guts to another) :)

  • happy hippy hippo, man i loved that game :p :D :) :p

  • sorry that should've been happy happy hippo :p

  • hungry hungry hippo, lol!!

  • I like riding bikes and I like putting bikes together. So I built my current ride. So what? I know lots of people who like riding bikes but don't like putting them together. So they go to a shop. So what? If I didn't like putting bikes together I'd go to a shop. At the end of the day, it's pretty hard to make it cheaper yourself anyway if you don't have the time to spend hours tracking down bargains/secondhand parts/etc.

  • hippy How many of you own a headset press?
    .

you can make a well useable press with certain parts from a hardware shop/builder's merchant for next to fuck all.

but I'm not telling you how.

I'm an experienced bike mechanic, and throwing up a fixed or track bike (even with chainline issues) is child's play, compared to dealing with hydraulic disc brakes and suspension forks. But it took a few years of swearing, crying and tool collecting to get to these heady heights, many people simply don't want to get involved with that side of things, despite how long they've been riding, personally I enjoy it.

anyway, whoever's having fishfingers, chips and beans for dinner is a lucky cunt.

I'm having something of oriental origin, with rice noodles

  • i like puting togeather my own bikes and every time i build one i lern a little bit more! but i can understand if people dont want to get involved, its not every ones cup of tea? i sapose its same as me not trying to fix a computer? any way, each to there own

  • Yeah, I can imagine one.. I used to be a star woodwork student.. know about clamping.. but we are talking about peeps building bikes.. and even I hate working on bikes.. Bike shop workshops exist for people who haven't got the time, tools or inclination to build or repair their bikes. I see nothing wrong with it. Sometimes I'll have a big repair session but I just don't wanna be out in the cold putting together a bike only to find the fscking tool I need I don't have..
I had to call 31trum to use his hammer and a fscking screwdriver ffs! (and yet I have a 17mm cone spanner??) What was the point. I dunno.. just killing time now :P

  • you just can't bear to be away from him, can you?
    even for one minute

  • hippy and 31trum sitting in a tree.........

  • He's in Spain and it's killing me..

  • Well as they say... the proof is in the pudding! I'd like to take a look at this bike that hospipe has thrown together.

  • uh oh... ling ling do battle now! :)

"I've got this bottom bracket and when I hit it with a hammer it doesn't seem to fit right and the thingies on the side are scored now and this doesn't fit and now i don't know what to do and i wonder if you could help with this because my girfriend wants the living room back and there's three and a half bikes there already and i'm still building one and.."

  • hosepipe but there IS no market ! the vast majority of fixed gear bikes have been put together by their owners because it's so simple and enjoyable.

Cooking is also simple and enjoyable! And London is still full of restaurants and bistros :)

  • I'm a chef and I love having my dinner cooked for me....I can't taste what I make by the time it gets to the table.

love the way the words "make" and "build" are used on this forum, unless you actually get out a welding torch, then I think we must mean "assemble" (parts and components "made" or "built" by others)............

build - 1. to construct (esp. something complex) by assembling and joining parts or materials: to build a house.

    I'm working on it!
