That my current university department is being closed after next year, despite being the largest of its kind in the country and doing plenty of internationally recognised research, because apparently it is making "no measurable contribution to the university" wtf? :( Rubbish

Instead of interpreting "no measurable" as nothing, interpret it as unquantifiable, or priceless.

If a philosophy department is shut down, and there are no metrics by which HEFCE can quantify its contribution, does it still make a difference?

But seriously, that's shit. And unfortunately what you'd expect at the moment. Even in science, its hard to do basic research - if there isn't a multinational company waiting to buy a patent off you as soon as the project comes to an end, forget it. I worked in this kind of area for a couple of years. The direction British HE is going in is incredibly philistine and venal.

Its bullshit. The department is the highest RAE rated subject in the entire university, with the biggest MA philosphy programme in the country, and the fucking Dean is closing the department so they can push more money into fucking bollox media degrees. I fucking hate this country sometimes.
