There have been a various campaigns by varoius groups throughout history to discredit Jews. I guess a lot of it comes from the steriotypes created by these campaigns that still linger.

I don't know nearly enough on the subject, but if you're ever in Berlin, go to the Jewish Museum. Far more info than anyone can take in in one go, but very educational.
