  • Nicholas Anybody got any tips or experience? What should I use to strip it? What should I use to prime it? What should I use to paint it?

Encouraging words like "your body is so nice, don't be shy", some sassy music ('You can leave your hat on' always works), dimmed lighting and a little champagne to ease the nerves..
Once stripped, and ready to prime, I would start talking dirty, suggesting some 'fun' activities, more champagne, a little playful fondling, some kissing.
Then.. Paint it! Paint it baby! WOO HOO! YEAH YEAH! COME ON! OOOH YEAH BABY!!!

Forget all that, I would just do it up the bottom bracket.

  • Up the bum, no harm done!

  • Sand the frame with some reasonably coarse sand paper (I used 200 grit because I found some in the back of a drawer) - mainly to give the surface a good 'key' for the paint to hold on to and to smooth out any scratches or nicks.

(you could also simply use Nitromos/Paint stripper and then give the clean frame a light scuffing)

Make sure the frame is grease and dust free, a quick bath with some washing up liquid should do the trick, then make sure the whole frame is dry.

Set up a clothes line or something to hang your bike from - a broom handle in the seat tube or similar will also work.

Give the frame one coat of grey primer, hold the can around 25cm away from the frame and keep it moving.

Give it an hour or so to dry.

Give the frame a few coats of your chosen colour, hold the can around 25cm away from the frame and keep it moving, keep each coat fairly light, don't try and cover it in one pass, and leave 15-20 minutes between each coat (there should be a recommended time between coats on the can).

Use a fast drying spray paint so your frame is not wet for an extended period of time and thus is less likely to have dust stick to it.

Your frame will be touch dry in 20 minutes if you keep your coats light and even, but not 'set' or hardened' as yet, you need to leave it for 24 hours or so for the paint to fully set - the longer the better, some say leave it for a few days before remounting all the hardware.

I am no expert and this is all simply personal experience and how I have sprayed many things over the years, they generally look pretty good.

Make sure the shell is 73mm.

  • EBB for me.. :P

  • Anyone have any idea about the best thing for stripping a frame? I want to leave it kind of ruined so don't wont a pro job.

  • Are you stripping the frame of someone who pissed you off on your commute?

  • Nitromors

  • dremmel... paint goes away, and you can leave it where you want it.

  • Have to agree with the Nitromors vote. Make sure you wear rubber gloves and don't use it in an enclosed space as the fumes can be harsh. If you want a 'distressed' look you could just try painting the Nitromors onto some parts of the frame and not on others before washing it off.

  • +1 for Nitromors

For gods sake wear goggles and gloves, no fucking around here, a splash on your skin will have you running to the bathroom to flood the area with water, you have around 5-10(ish) seconds until burn through so if you are fast and near a sink you will be fine.

    . . . but. . .

get some in your eyes, even a small splash and you are officially fucked, the result will be somewhere between reduced vision, scaring and loss of sight.

    GOGGLES, GOGGLES, GOGGLES !!!!!!!

    • like VanUden said - work with plenty of retaliation - preferably outdoors.

Watch as it's fiery goodness eats hard baked factory paint work.

  • i've had nitromorse in my eye, it wasn't so bad.
The ride to the hospital was worse, two eyes are definitely better than one when riding a bike.

Go on, give us the story.

(sits back with a hob nob and cup of tea)

  • fucking hobnobs i cant wait for those, they are the shizzel.

  • I tough they used butter to make them hence not vegen

  • I bet that cup of tea has gone cold by now.

Long time ago, in my teens, summer's day outside on the lawn.. you get the picture.
Stripping the forks on my bmx "SE reynolds racer" . . big brushful of paint globbed nitromorse straight into my eye.
No one at home to take me to hospital, quick rinse of the eye did nothing to stop the fiery pain. I ended up hastily putting my bike back together and riding a mile to the hospital. I'd remembered to take the tin of nitro with me so the casualty staff would know what was in it. They basically mixed up some kind of gel and put it in an eye bath.

by the time i got home the nitromorse on the forks had completely dried and kind of welded itself to the paint never to be removed completely.

    wear goggles.

Sounds like you were very lucky, so no scaring or damage ?

I am not sure I could assemble a bike whilst my eyes were on fire !!

  • Yeah, goggles and gloves.
I flicked a tiny piece of paint/nitromors combo into my eye and it killed.

Also if you apply and then wrap in plastic bags it 'cooks' the paint off quicker.

  • Does that works with alloy as well?

  • Roberto £€$ Does that works with alloy as well?

    Pretty sure it does chap.

  • Hi all, does anyone know how I can strip paint on a frame safely? I've just bought a frame and I think there's chrome underneath (part of the chainstays are chrome) so I wanted to see whether the full rear triangle is chrome and strip it back.

Are most part-chromed frames actually fully chromed with paint on top of some areas?

    Thanks!
    Jon

  • nitromors should be ok. and will not damage the chrome
