• Aluminium forms an oxide on its surface when exposed to air. Aluminium Oxide. *
BUT* no frame is pure aluminium, it'll be one of various alloys.

I always fancied copper plating a steel frame. (Very easy to do with copper sulphate)) Which will turn green if you dont protect it from air/oxygen: ) But varnish it and it should be OK..... Maybe.

  • Ives, is that Ribble just polished or is it lacquered afterwards?
If it is, I'd like to know what with.
Or do you just keep polishing it?

    polished. No laquer.

I was told all sorts of scare stories about stripping an alu frame and about how fast it would oxidise and how one would have to polish it every few days to stop it going dull grey.

All of these proved to be untrue.
I polished mine after I stripped it and that was 3 months ago and I haven't touched it since. It still looks as good as the day I polished it. No dulling or oxidisation at all, that I can see.

  • If the polish excludes oxygen (only >20% in the air) it should not oxidise. Or at least if it does, very slowly.

  • Word!

I'm going to get my frame powder coated. Theres a little car body/spray shop round the back of my house in Clapton and I was wondering what an average price would be to get this done somewhere? I don't want these fellas muggin' me off.

Looking back at old threads people are chatting around £45...but this could have changed now.

    Thanks,
    WIGS

Armourtex up the road from you is extremely good. Sandblast and powdercoat for around £60-£70 depending on choice of paint etc. They know bikes.

  • Search the forum for "Armourtex" if you want a different option. There should be some various costs mentioned as well.

  • On this subject... Does anyone know if it's possible to do the paintjob yourself and then just get a clear laquer coat done? The sort of paint job I have in mind would cost me more than sixty quid I fear..!

    Big cheers,

    Miked

  • Can't see why not..
Armourtex price separately for the powder coat and lacquer...

  • Cheers guys. Big up. I was worried about sanding myself...was NOT looking forward to it.

    George

  • You must check with Armourtex/any painter first. Not all paints are compatible - their lacquer might react with your paint and they might be unwilling to do the job because of this. Also if the lacquer is baked like a powdercoat, it'll destroy the paint underneath due to the high temperatures.
