Hi guys somebody has offered a wheelset, but it is a singlespeed freewheel Miche primato hub, I want to convert it to fixed, I've checked out sheldons site (RIP) but wanted to know how dangerous this may be to ride, want to do this as cheap as poss

Suicide hub! Hope you're going to be using a front brake.

would be using a front brake, so would it better to re-lace the back with a fixed hub?
-

If you want to take the risk, definitely rotafix it and loctite the sprocket on.

Get hold of a bottom bracket lock ring as well.
Ive been running a suicide hub with bb lock ring for a while now on a brakeless pub bike with no worries

Considering converting my commuter to either ss or fixed. Fixed would be the cheaper option as I have a few sprockets lying around that I'm not using on my track bike, but put off by riding a suicide hub. Lot's of anecdotal evidence of people running a suicide hub without problems, but has anyone had any bad experences they'd like to share ?
Also, I'll be using a 1/8 sprocket with a 3/32 chainring. Doable ? If so which pitch chain should I use ?

Yes.
What size chain do you think will fit over both of those? Will a 1/8th chain fit over my 3/32 chainring, yes, will a 1/8th chain fit over my 1/8th sproket, yes.
Will a 3/32nd chain fit over my 3/32 chainring, yes, will a 3/32nd chain fit over my 1/8th sproket, NO.

Hmm, I can't quite be sure, but I think you're recomending a 1/8 chain. Could you spell it out a bit more for me please ?

'Indigo Tango'
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Bicycles/Maintenance_and_Repair/Chains/Chain_sizesThe size refers to the width between the plates, so a wider 1/8" chain can fit over both 1/8" and 3/32" sprockets / cogs.
a narrower 3/32" chain will be marginally lighter, but will not fot over any 1/8" components. -

It seems like a lot of people are, or have been, converting peugeot's! I have one myself and I'm just about to suicide the hub to fix it (it's broken, you see (!)). I bought the cog earlier and I have an old bb lock ring, so I think I'll get to it first thing tomorrow before my commute and get it nice and tight. I'm pretty sure I'll be running at least a front brake with te new set up for a while to give me chance to get used to the fixed gear and to avoid any unneccesary scary undoing of the cog.

You run one?

Yes did for a year just get a really good sprocket and bb lock ring some locktight retaining compound! really really tight! Slid skip skid all good.
-
• #44
I put mine on a few days ago and it seems to be running ok. The only problem was that I bought a shimano track cog with is really wide (better chainline for my bike) but then the lock ring is only just on the last line of thread. I havent started skidding it yet, so we'll see what happens when I do.

Lurker, say bye to the hub.

• #46
don't jinx me!
-
• #47
your lockring needs 3 threads.
-
• #48
Yeah I know. I wasn't happy when I found out how little thread I had. I think I'll ride it 'til it comes loose, then do something about it. Probably need a thinner cog, then re-dish the wheel. Or, alternatively, buy a new wheel!

+1
3 threads sounds good, minimum
