• yeah probably bmx 1".

    But you can still dream!

  • Wished that was mine

  • no obvious means of carrying shopping ?
    (ref. #163)
racks panniers baskets etc are necessary for onlookers to put their ignorant mockery in context...

  • That black thing at the front be be a quick release bracket for a basket, surely

  • needs carbon rims, DI2 and discs

I'll just leave this one here then...

  • OMG, this is my next TT bike
    needs a basket though.

thankfully dammit is on his way to paris roubaix, surely this is lighter than his bike

  • I'm designing a 2 crate 20" wheeled cargo bike, I probably can get it down to £250 for frame+forks in bmx grade cro-mo. Who would be interested?
I'm probably going to do a one off first to test, but would be nice to have a short production going.

  • I'm interested in the design of it; PM me if you need help/ideas/inspiration please PM me!

  • Haha, I don't think I need help, but if you want to invest in the project I don't mind your input.
Pretty much this but more clever structure:

  • I liked the look of that frame too, although it's a fairly agricultural solution to the problem of carrying weight - build the whole bike around one massively stiff/heavy beam tube. I don't know how much weight I'd want to put on that cantilevered rear rack - it feels like it should have another tube running down to the rear dropouts. Does the seattube go through the central beam tube?

Seatstays look on the skinny side, too. The force from a 100kg rider + however much on the rack going straight from the seat cluster into that un-gusseted seatstay worries me a bit.

Anyway. If you'd like some free input on technical stuff, styling, graphics + colour/trim, a logo, visual CAD stuff - PM me - I've got some time before my next industrial design contract thing starts and I'd like to dip my toe into cycle design.

  • Thanks, I agree but I'm an industrial designer myself so I'll be ok ;)
I really don't mind collaborating but I'd like to do that with people who really want to get a bike like this for themselves (users+investors)

  • maybe a repost, but id love to have something like this

  • Heh, no worries then. I would be interested as a user, but living on a postgrad's budget means that can't happen.

  • I'm in the process of ordering a ti mini-velo frame from Taiwan. I'll just swap the parts over.

It's finished now. Only awaiting rear Spok and Ultegra rear mech.
Right now it's single speed and the handlepost swapped for a one piece.

I've tried to buy one, but they don't ship to the UK...

  • What is the point of a bike like that Soma ?

Surely it's basically the same size as a normal bike all in? So what's the benifit if it doesn't fold?

    • but at roughly 10" shorter and 3" lower it's much easier to throw in the car without the need to remove wheels or wrestle with unfolding...
  • Furry muff.

I looking at the Seven thinking there maybe some aero advantage (and without wanting to come off as stereotyping / racist it's from the far east and they often have different tastes and more imagination.

    EEI's bike can go smaller.

The Soma just looks a bit Inbetween, so I was wondering if there was something else I was missing.

  • Yep, mine folds and fits into a bag (despite the big fold determined by the bigger 20" wheels). It's also very fast and fairly stiff. I was even thingking about racing at the Nocture - I know I'd beat those scrawny Bromptons, but if I won DSS would take away my incapacity money :-)

  • They are easier to store in small spaces and that's why they're so popular in the ubran areas of Far East. 20" wheels make the wheelbase much shorter and the front fits under a table etc.

Oops, Mr. Ed said the same already.

  • Just got a Raleigh Nova on Gumtree for a tenner! I almost went past it as it was poorly titled in the ad, thankfully they had a photo so I had a closer look. Plenty of surface rust but it looks solid, and it was great fun to ride home on!
