My shopper gets more amazed looks and complimentary comments than any bike I've ever owned. To be fair they are probably just amazed I've thrown so much money at a cast iron granny bike.

Is the background the beach on Merseyside with the Antony Gormley statues?

It is indeed.

My three-speed constant-downhill frankenshopper project.
Skip rescue frame, rebuilt with bits from the bin and other projects, plus new rear rim, tyres, cheap ebay forks. Waiting for Sturmey Archer sprocket & shifter, then cable up, fit chain, grips, & go. If I like it I might invest in some paint.

(ps/ trying the rear rack from my daughter's old bike for size. might keep it, might think of something else...)

Looking good! I had a twenty fixed but top much hassle with raleigh propetary threads! Always wanted a kingpin as you can get a decent bb and cranks! 20" fixed is awesome!

Very nice. I like the paint work.

Started the next foldy project yesterday.
perfect! only wasn't after she was nicked, beaten and left for dead on the road.So I want to do something to fix me damaged Elswick.
The Phat seat post has been stolen/lost its 35mm which is a size not found on the earth at this time, so improvise with extender pipe/shimmage.
And i wants to replace the bent quill with an AHead because i want to.
Ahead adapter into a downtube harvested from a dead frame, jubilee clip of death to be replaced with double height BMX seat clamp ASAP.
Still faffing over the bars and stem, and waiting on a 30.4mm seatpost [any one?] cross levers or Aeros? risers or horns? suggestions on a post please.

Still have your tyres, FB. Will see when I'm free to venture West.
Seriously shit, so I left it behind at the summer house and will look for a ss thing. I wanted a ti one, but not sure if £600 for a frame before customs isn't a daylight robbery.

Is there a working definition of 'shopper' ?
-
• #163
You go to the shops on it...
Raleigh Shopper was a... shopper and that's why you call them little shoppers and folders this way. Simple, single speed/fixed, racks.
Here's a nice folder - the same I was given for my First Communion (coaster brake)

I picked up a nice '77 Raleigh Twenty at a car boot sale - three speed with twist shifter, polished mudguards and Pletscher rack. The steel rims aren't great... and alloy 451mm rims are somewhat expensive (£35 each) and seem to be rare secondhand. I think I'll probably build it up as singlespeed with a secondhand 406mm BMX wheelset and make some drop-bolts for the brakes. The AW hub feels draggy - I'm not inclined to flush it out and re-use it; I think it'll work better as a singlespeed.
Sheldon's right, too - I took it out on the heath and it's pretty good offroad. Makes my commute more interesting than sticking to the road, too.

Yep, get some 406 and stick fat BMX tyres.
-
• #166
I'll be commuting on this one from now on. I'll leave it geared for a while.

eBay BMX - removed 360 gyro and 4" from the bars, added home made racks, mudguard, chainguard, derailleur hanger, and paid money for a suitable length seat post. Total cost so far around £40 plus raiding the garage scrap box ...

Good. At least you don't have to deal with obsolete threads and sizes. Is it heavy, though?
-
• #171
29 lbs total - not sure how that compares with a Twenty?

• #172
that's great, nice work. 30ish llbs for a 'normal' shopper so not too shabby.

Anyone needs a set of regular black Kenda tyres for their shopper?
20" x 1.5 (40x406). Virtually new.
Like Kenda Kwest, similar thread.I'll take them off once the Schwalbe Big Apples arrive.
