strangely though, the correlation with increased safety from helmets on bikes. is due to less people riding bikes.
same with wearing seat belts. increases risk taking behaviour in drivers and leads to more pedestrian deaths. only time that seatbelts being introduced lead to less car deaths. was in england. in the 1970s. in the oil crisis. when less people drove.

that's what a man down the pub told me.

Sorry, but whatever you choose to do, at least know the right reasons.

Seatbelts do lead to less car deaths, massively so, just like wearing a helmet will reduce head injuries in the case of an accident. And the arguement that wearing a seatbelt/helmet increases risky behaviour and therefore increases accidents is complete rubbish. Just an excuse some guy made up to explain to his girlfriend why he doesn't wear a helmet.

I don't wear a helmet because it feels uncomfortable/looks uncool/messes up my hair/whatever. I also realise that if I have a serious accident I'm more likely to get f**ked up. Just accept it.

  • ha ha...yeh...dunno...it IS racism...but so brazen that it's funny (while still not being right)...

the bit that really tickles me is that the whole class loved it

  • CHUG_IT I haven't had a brake on any of my bikes since I was 7 years old.. it's not a trend for me, it's just the way I see my bike should be.

  • I want to meet his parents, 7 years old and no brake ...YIKES

  • My only addition to this fucking turgid non thread is:

    • would it be fun to have an emergency stop competition at the next ride / party / fakengercat?

i.e. race up to a line in pairs, shortest stopping distance wins, knock out style.

I reckon it'd be quite a laugh, you could end up on your arse but it would improve riding skills e.g. both leg braking.

    Thoughts?

  • shut up minnie! :P

  • Cock off haircut!

but the person with the brakes would win - so i'm well up for it

  • that's my line, minnieConservativeLookin'mouse

  • ive seen something like this before where you have to sprint to a line then stop in a box, then the box gets smaller and smaller till theres a winner.

  • I think it all comes down to it, which is why I strongly believe in the phenomenon, but also realize that people differ in the way. Anyone in their right mind would essentially, but you've got to respect the choices of those - ironic really, seeing as it's all about these things in this kind of thread, though censorship wouldn't really. On the one hand I really do, but when the whim takes me, I've been known to come from the other side. I could talk about the preverbial, but that would get things off topic, and there have been so few, which is a case in point. Reminds me of that time in the kitchen :D

  • it goes without saying brakes would win, it would be an interesting demonstartion of the different stopping distances and the amount of control over direction....

how do you make sure everyone goes at the same speed?

  • Race to the line head to head?

  • the-smiling-buddha I want to meet his parents, 7 years old and no brake ...YIKES

Yeah man, my mum is the worst for letting me out brakeless!

Fuck it, I bet I can ride better than 90% of the flouro army who commute every day with front and back brakes. I've been brakeless forever so I know no other way of riding bikes, and have no plans of changing either.

It's just a set up, it's no big deal.

  • [quote]ihatelaw j And the increased awareness you have has saved my ass many, many times. you watch cars' front wheels in traffic to see if they're going to turn without indicating - saved me many times - and you just don't learn to do that if you have the option of braking.

Yes and if those fucking idiots hadn't put life boats on the Titanic then the captain would have had increased 'iceberg awareness' and we'd be saluting the amazing long life of one of the finest cruise liners to sail the seven seas.

  • Why do people never complain about people using one coaster brake? I suppose the bikes they are normally on are more designed for going slower but other than that I don't see a difference.

It's not rubbish, sunshine, and I think you need to have a look at some literature on risk compensation.

Risk compensation is a well-recognised phenomenon in road 'safety'. As people feel safer, they engage in riskier behaviour. A cursory read of Robert Davis' book 'Death on the streets' will enlighten you.

  • Bill, I also love calling people 'sunshine', but 'Death on the streets' by Robert Davis, ain't exactly a best seller mate

  • The felling safer thing is a problem with many modern cars I believe. While the brakes are better they have abs e.t.c If you have never driven and old banger without all the safety features you don't realize how fast 50 mph can feel and how easily a little rain means you need to drive a lot more cautiously. I think this is why you see so many people driving like manics in the wet / ice e.t.c because they have even forgot or have never driven a car which actually shows them how fragile their grip and control is on the road. Hence people take more risks because their vechile feel just as secure at all speeds and conditions even though it isn't.

  • I agree Tommy. You always adjust your riding style when you know its a bit wet & greasy under your wheels - people in cars don't have the same level of attachment to the outside elements.

On another forum of mine I got involved in this hoo-haa, and called someone 'dear' in pretty much the same context as Bill just did. I think I'm still hated for that. Some people take being patronised on the internet very badly. I take illogical thought pretty badly.

In the end, it all looks like this:

My other favourite put-down is, "Don't make me come over there...". That also gets me in all kinds of trouble.

I just can't help but be a clutz online. It's a very limited media.

  • "arguing on the internet"

but that's what the internet is for!!

  • [pedant] medium* [/pedant]

    • which proves your point.
  • It should be two competitions in one:

Race to a line within a set time(12 seconds or something) - brake - shortest distance

  • I think we should throw babies in front of bikes and film it tio show the BBC how safe we are riding bikes without brakes
