Damn... you need to be on at least 49x16! Otherwise you'll be out of breath by the 3rd lap!!

The rules state between 80 and 90 gear inches so 46x16 (77.6)is not high enough. 49x16 is a good ratio, low 80s are easier to control with a slightly higher cadence so acceleration and constant speeds are easier to achieve.
Tubs are the way to go for the track!

Thanks. I was reading about the Keirin style racing yesterday and they were talking of speeds around 30mph after the durney pulls off on the final lap. Pretty frantic pedalling on 44x16 ;-) 80-90 inches makes more sense.

Tomorrow is good weather for track cycling - Confirmed.
I will be there from 10:30 riding my blue Condor wearing the most garish helmet I can find from the HH selection.
If any of you lot get down say hello.

I'll be there. Just bought a smaller sprocket and with flip the flop when I get there.
Need to do the newbie class at 8.45 but will stay for the later sessions. I'll be on my white Nagasawa. I'll look out for you.

I might give it a go cus I have never done that before & it might be fun! My bike is a little matt black ribble, please come and say hi to me cus I never met any of you guys yet... aw!

I'm still considering going for the induction thing, I don't think I'd be brave enough to ride with people whizzing by at 30mph or something silly like that. Would I be okay with 48x18 for the induction? I'm thinking it shouldn't get too fast, does it?
-
• #35
I will be riding a 48/13 and that is about right for me, but as I said earlier the HH posse loan out bikes and they will be adequately geared.

Do they run out of hire bikes? I don't know if they'll let my little Ribble on the track cus he's not a track bike, hes a racer. He's got gears and everything. I'm saving to get a singlespeed (wich is why I allow myself on this forum, BTW)

nope, no gears allowed on saturdays as far as I know.. or brakes for that matter..
-
• #38
They have HUNDREDS of bikes, chain your ribble up.

okeydokey !!! yippee can't wait. Must go to sleep then. Apparantly as its my first time I have to do the induction. 8:45 a.m.?!? Aaaaaaaaaarghhh...

Oooooh, what sort of clips do they use BTW? SPD or Keo or something else? I have shoes for both.
-
• #41
I thiiiink you could probably use your own pedals..?

Tarka, Sarah, Slamm, Edmundane...and anyone else I saw today at Herne Hill...good to see you. Thanks to Alistair too...good advice and uber patient with the newbies...much appreciated.
Thia was my first time at Herne Hill and I had a great time. Didn't flip the flop so at 74 gear inches I was spinning a bit too much. Didn't effect my enjoyment and was perfectly fine for the induction class.
I'm away cycling in Iceland over the next two weekends so wont be down for a while but thoroughly recommend it to anyone who is considering it!

it's ok man - don't worry about it :)
what happened to your knee? -
• #47
hit it pretty hard on the handlebars yesterday (on the bmx).. Thought it was nothing and kept riding, then went shopping, etc.. When I finally settled in the sofa, it started to hurt a bit and after half an hour I couldn't get up lol.. Never really hurt that much, I just couldn't bend the knee at all and it made me feel sick, very weird..
It's a lot better this morning, so I'm confident it'll be fine tomorrow..

Might be up for that depending on how bad Friday night gets... They do the induction every Saturday morning, right?
Wanna try 48:15 on the track... Poppin' kneecap time! :-S
46x16 is definetely a good gearing for this...
tip: make sure dont loose the stream of the pack, otherwise it means MUCH harder work to make it back to the pack!
tip2: more pressure on those tyres!!
