Which Chain? (Chains / Size / Width / Wear)

Yeah probably but every topic I found both using the search function and the suggestions you get when starting a new topic is about locking chains and I need advice about drive chains. So a link to a relevant topic would be much appreciated.

all chains are the same IMO,except the no-name ones made with recycled coke cans and melted down ak-47's.

Stick to KMC or other well knowns' and your all set. Cheapest ones by these manufacturers are not inferior from my experience.

My Sram one lasted quite nice. Not noticeably better than an Izumi.

+1. The only company making sensibly priced bushed chain, 1Z1 is good if you aren't abusive, 1R8 is bomb proof but without the benefit of galvanised finish.

I saw that on CRC a while back. It's listed as a BMX chain and doesn't list the number of links, so was weary of purchasing...I assume it comes with plenty then.

They used to be 96 links, but are now 112. There might be some old stock around, so check before buying. The first one I got from CRC was short, so I had to send it back, I got my full length one from Wiggle.

NJS chains have the screw-out pin. Quick links are usually sold separatly. I always use them on my commuter, to make cleaning the chain easier in winter.

I've always had problems with Izumi screw links. I thought they were the best idea ever until I finished a Nat champ race with the screw half out and no nut. It was all done up tight beforehand. After that I tried superglue but nothing seemed to want to keep it in. Must have been the sheer power coming from the legs of an endurance rider.

Splitting a chain is no big deal if you have a decent chain splitter. I sometimes prefer to split the chain rather than use faffy split links.

Not being a Kierin racer, I took that part of my chain off when I shortened to fit. This chain doesnt see the shite my commuter does, so I dont need to break it really. Even when I swap from my usual 48 : 16/17 to my climbing gear 41 : 26, luckily the chain length works.

If going for 3/32 on fixed, does anyone know which would work best - 8, 9 or 10 speed 3/32 chain?

Best chain for 3/32" fixed is Wippermann 7R8, pretty much the only bushed 3/32" chain you can buy these days. For daily all weather use I'd go for the 7Z1 instead, not as smooth or strong but will last better, also half the price.

Some 3/32" track sprockets don't like 9/10/11 speed chains, which have a fractionally narrower roller width than 3/32"

Miche Pista: Anyone had any problems before using this? Mine snapped, twice in 2 weeks...

I'm about to change my front chainring from a 42 to 48, so obviously I'll need a new chain to go with it, is the Izumi still the one to go for? Any other recommendations?
Should I change my sprocket at the same time (it's about 6 months old)?

Anything else I need to be aware of?

Sprocket should be OK, depends on the state of your current chain really. Izumi are good but a bit pricey. The KMC 510 is available form Parkers for £6, is perfectly adequate and more importantly a lot quieter than the Izumi.

I'm trying one of these £2.50 beauties on the everyday-hackcycle. Smell the quality!

I had one years ago and don't remember it being particularly bad.

Im just completing my first single speed build, i have a FSA Gimondi crankset with the standard ring it came with, along with a dura-ace single speed rear sprocket. All new.

Am i fine with an 1/8 chain?

Any tips for a decent fairly light hard wearing chain?
