Removing stuck or seized seatpost?

  • Ha ha ha ha..... at this rate it'll need merlin!!!

  • You don't need magic, just high explosive, a shaped plastic charge should do the job nicely!!!

  • What a mission!

Could you get the seattube 're-reamed' to remove the remaining seatpost?

Or if its going for a respray anyway then what about using a hot-air gun on the seattube with seatpost dipped in some liquid nitrogen (available in your friendly local university physics lab..).. Ice-water is a lame substitute.

Do you still have enough of the post sticking out to get a decent grip?

  • tomiskinky Nope, it aint budging at all, got some big grips on it, but nothing! Gotta try get a good seal as I tried it last night and it leaked out!!!

Have you tried the hot rags?

  • Not had chance... Had another go at cutting last night - but no matter how flat I run the blade it only cuts the first few inches!!

Used a waterproof sealing tape to try another chemical attack - it leaked!

Hot rags, boiling water, caustic soda - all a bit tricky in my flat on the 4th floor, don't want to wreck landlords carpet!!!!

Do I cut it flush so I can cut into the tube further down? Running out of ideas!

  • screw it
    buy another bike dude

  • Too defeatist, i'll not stop until it's either out, or the frame is bust!

  • i say put it in a vice and twist the frame

  • Well, if I had a vice i may be able to do it, but as I snapped the top of the post twisting it by the saddle - chances are a vice'll fair little better and probably break more of the tube?

  • what about this:

i think it will come out if you just have enough leverage to twist it. create a hole through the post, then stick a long stiff object (:o) through it (you'll need about a metre). Something like a golf club but thinner

providing the object is stiff enough, it should work.

  • i cut it flush, so I could cut straighter....no way back to alternative method from that though....it is difficult to cut straight, over compensation the "other" way seemed to work for me....I have seen hacksaws that look just like a blade attahched to a handle. one of those might be better?

  • You CAN get hacksaw blade holders that only hold it from one side:

But would this be long enough? I used a towel round the blade... buy some nice quality blades and build those arms!

  • Looked at one of those in the DIY place yesterday, but i can cut that deep just holding it with my hand... I am thinking the cutting flush option is the only way?

Some good advice from all, gonna throw a party if I get it out!!! :D

  • do you have any post left at the top to stick it to a vice? if you do, let me know...

  • If you are getting it resprayed you could try using some mapp gas (get it from a plumbing shop) and heating up the seat tube. As Winston says once you have cut the seat post off flush you are down to one option only. Try and borrow some pipe gripes or a access to a vice from someone to give a go out a bit of twisting. As you say this may well damage the seat post more but you can always end up cutting it flush after but you can't try twisting it after you have cut it flush. Where do you live? I have a BIG vice type contraption that should beable to grip anything we could give that ago if you want. I live in Plumstead (zone 4 s.e) but will be working at Woolwhich Dockyard (zone 3 s.e only a couple of hundred yards away from the foot tunnel) over the w/e. If you fancy comming round we can give it ago.

  • Have you tried taking it to a bike shop? They'll have the tools and the know-how. I took mine down Brixton cycles in the end and they got it out for me, up until that point I had tried everything.

  • Brick Lane took the BB out as I didn't have an old style pin tool, asked them, but they couldn't help. Been using pipe grips, but it don't move! I live in Bow - out east.

  • if you're in clerkenwell, we can have a go at using a vice and twisting the frame around the post.

  • How long are your pipe grips? If they are not about 3 feet in length you will no be getting at much tourque as you can get with a vice.

  • Yeah, about a foot long... so hard to get good leverage? I ride through Clerkenwell on the way to my studio, maybe I could stop by tomorrow with the frame? Where abouts are you, and what time you in?

  • i'm on back hill right across the road from hatton gardens. what time are you heading to the studio? what about 11am or so? we'll take it into the workshop, but the technicians need to be in...as they have the key.

  • Doh, just looked at my meeting list - Have a meeting with Nokia all day! Any chance I could drop it off with you earlier and then come over after my meeting?

Gonna be having a go at it again tonight anyway? Let me know if that is an option?

  • I pass you about 8:30.

  • that works. tell you what, let me know what time you're going to drop the frame off and i'll have a go getting it out in the workshop. then, you can just pick up the frame with either outcome. also, when are you finished your meetings with nokia?

ok: 8:30 is fine. meet me outside of 10 back hill at 8:30am. it's a glass entrance to the art college.

  • Hope to finish about 4ish? You got a number Ican get you on if I get it out tonight?
