Removing stuck or seized seatpost?

  • I had a stuck seat-pin. Daughters boyfriend who is an engineer took it to work and bored it out. Very successful, then she dumped him! Try a small machine shop.

  • Hello. Im posting in search of help.. i've removed a seized seat post with caustic soda with help from heat + hammer and flat head screwdriver...
issue now is that the seat tube has been deformed to a point that the seat pin will not hold a new seat post...
The only solution i can see would be to hammer the seat tube so it would lock the post in... would love to avoid this...
    is there an alternative??

  • nope, bang the bastard back just enough to put on seatclamp/tighten original one

do this at your own risk, you have to ba an expert in the "art of the hammerâ„¢"

  • Hi I'm a framebuilder and frmae renovatorerer so have to remove stuck in things all the time.

If you can't remove them with plusgas etc. Then don't just resort to melting the post. The crucial thing is heat, but not just loads of it until it melts. Usually even the most stubborn ones come out intact by heating the frame to the lowest point of where the seat post goes in then attempt to turn just a very slight amount then we let them cool a bit but not to go cold then we put them in the vice upside down clamped by the seat post, thus turning the frame by the head and stays and it should then come out. Sometimes turning the frame is enough for one person if the bike still has kit on it, so get some one else pushing upwards to give the force needed for it to move out.
Hope this helps any future sufferers.

  • Hi I'm a frmae renovatorerer

that sounds like you like doing something painful

It is normally, not just physically either! :-)

  • Welcome Brian or Jason (?)

  • Thanks, it's Jason

  • How to get a stuck seatpost out?

  • funny

  • more helpful.

  • get your gf to suck it out for you

And can I recommend that you make better use of the search function on the forum?

I can't help but to have noticed that you have started lots of threads around around basic mechanics stuff that has been asked and answered lots of times already, and that a quick Google would help you find the answers to as well. A bit of effort will get you to the really useful information around here. There's also a thread for "first build help" that may also be more expedient for you. I'll let you find that yourself.

    Good luck with your build.

  • ok, going to try the caustic soda method.

    Regular drain cleaner stuff ok?

gonna wear goggles and gloves but are the fumes bad too? will be outside but should i be worried about breathing in?

    thanks!

  • some stuff about using caustic soda to remove seatposts in this thread

I remember the fumes as the worst bit, and there's a lot of them. And if you want to save the paint at all wrap it entirely in cling film or something, it spits quite a lot when the reaction gets going.

  • have you squirted a co2 cannister down the post? It should shrink it in size with the cold and then it might come up more easily....

  • I've got a seatpost to melt out; was thinking of injecting it with a syringe through the bottle cage mounts. Now I'm wondering if it will just melt my plastic syringe.

  • i'm not saying it's not without risks but as anyone tried mercury? looks like a quicker method than caustic soda.

  • Seized stem not seatpost, but succesfully removed using 3in1 a week ago, followed by CO2 and taps with a 4lb sledgehammer today.

No, i sheered the top part of the post off while trying to rotate it in a vice, so nothing to grab on to. I then sawed it off right near where it goes into the seat tube and tried the sawing slits into it method.. no luck so then got a screwdriver and prised it away from the seatube.. making a slight bulge in the seat tube.

    The things a mess haha

still want to try dissolving it out, just had no time this christmas

  • I need recommendations for a bike shop to give my seized seatpost frame to to get it out - it's just a beater so I don't mind about heating the frame up and fucking the paint up. I just want to be able to ride it.

As it's a beater I do have a threshold for how much money I'm willing to spend - which is probably around 50 quid. I was quoted 'anything up to 150 quid' by a local bike shop for drilling it out, which I'm not really up for as I could just buy a new frame for that.

  • speak to jonny (i think) in micycle in N1. he sorted one for me and is a thoroughly nice chap. you even get to be part of the process.
i think he likes the challenge.
