Got my Mercian back yesterday, everything seemed fine 'til I got it home... Decals on the head and seat tubes aren't seated properly so they're crinkled and the downtube ones aren't centred, they're about 5-10mm out... Really bloody shoddy...
Suppose I can't really complain, his brother took a coupla cable guides out and fixed the ovalised headtube... Paint seems fine tho' he did forget to line the lugs, which he did while I waited... £90...

it's a cheap paint job what do you expect? i don't think i would get expensive frames painted there, would use mercian or armourtex.

I will call and have a moan but he is so bloody cheap, Mercian wanted to charge me £300 for the same work... And I can't be arsed waitin' another fortnight, I just wanna ride the bloody thing...
I've learnt my lesson, I'l send her up to Derby next winter... :/

It's cheap, but not cheap enough to be that shoddy.

I'd be asking him to rectify it.

They are based oop north but for £30 they organised a courier to collect and return my frame. They did a fantastic job of it too.

mercian do the pick-up and return for £25. my respray which was inc 2 colours and luglining, plus a bit of welding in some holes, came to £176.

How much in total and how long did it take?

It took three weeks. Total cost, including courier fees was just under £200 but the frame was a Pinarello with some fancy overspraying that they replicated. I think a one colour respray starts at around £120.

They also provided frame transfers for that price. They didn't have a Pinarello head tube transfer so left the original on and painted around it. It was seamless. The guy obviously cares about his work.

will amourtex put on transfers?

I had an old trials frame done in the prismatic black from these guys (I think the prismatic flake is now an additive for any colour), they have some nice metallic colours:

has vaz threatened to sue your ass yet?

Most reports of Vaz say the same - chips easily and it's pretty likely that anything more complicated than paint (ie decals, pinstriping, luglining) will be wrong somehow.

The other london option is Colourtech in Dartford who do all the paint for Roberts. meant to be a lot better but costs about £120 or so (ie similar to Mercian, BJ). I've heard great things about Argos in Bristol but they're not cheap either.

i gave my frame to steve at armourtex on tuesday at 4.30 on tuesday evening and picked it up 24 hours later.

paint (well, powder) is immaculate- absolutely no complaints. nice guy too. didn't make me feel stupid for umming and ahhing about different shades of white either.

£45 or £60 with a coat of lacquer. i realise enamel is totally different but if you're happy with powder (which is much more durable) then give them a call.

I'm not convinced about Colourtech.

My CONdor's ok, but my DaFoney was shite.

It was 50/50 Colourtech/Witcomb fault-wise that mine went horribly wrong.

I with kowalski on colourtech - only from one experience though, so it's not necessarily the whole picture, but the frame I got done there was a bit on the shoddy side (and slow to boot). I haven't seen the goods yet but I've got a frame at Mercian and their customer service is fairly confidence inspiring.

Dodgy decals? Wot dodgy decals? Built the Mercian up today and she rides great, all is well... :D

An associate had a frame with Vaz for weeks, finally he was told it was finished. Rode down to collect it, strapped it to his bag and brought it to show us. By the time he got to us the bag had badly scratched the paint job as apparently it hadn't fully dried..... :-(

has anyone heard of armourtex doing a metallic flake powder coat finish? I know it's possible, just curious if it's been done though.
