Earphones / Headphones: Where to try, what to buy?

  • Fuck it, just ordered the Bose 25 from John Lewis with a price match, total of £229, if I don't like it then I shall return it...

  • I've got the momentum over ears. I really like them. I was consenting the hifiman. But as good as they may be, they are still pricey and I have already coughed up over 100 for the klipsch in ears that I'd be giving to Sarah.

  • Dug out the receipt (from John Lewis) for the headphones; they are in warranty and being replaced; happy with that. Glad I bought from JL.

  • Glad I bought from JL.

One of the many reasons that whenver I can I buy from JL

  • Well, apparently the HifiMan Re-400's are OK - and might be the ones to try? Found some for £48 at advanced MP3 site. Maybe I'll try those before stumping up the 200 odd for the "better" ones. I'll let you know. @BRM

  • I always buy from JL but never pay there price, their price match is pretty good. The only downside is you'd have to pay full price upfront and then ask for a refund...

  • invest in the big boys, go on... :)

  • have returned to Shure after trying Ultimate Ears and Etymotic's,, which both suffered cable issues.
Got some of the SE215's for christmas
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Shure-SE215-Dynamic-Microdriver-Earphones-BLACK/dp/B004PNZFZ8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1425379819&sr=8-1&keywords=shure+se215

and they are going great guns, big sound, blocking out extraneous noise when you fit them correctly.

but they do have a really nice design feature of the earbud itself allowing you to disconnect it from the cable

so if the cable does get fucked, you can swap them out for a smaller price than replacing the whole headphone..

  • If you take them evidence of the price they'll normally match it on the spot, no?

  • I know - trying to be sensible but then I already have the Klipsch X10 - may as well try the next level up. I really should sell the set of Westone UMX3 I have - more like studio/gig monitors and very much look like hearing aides. Sound amazing, but really need an amp and I'm not drumming anymore so they are sitting in a draw unused.

  • Only with a high street store within a certain radius of a JL store you want to price match, whereas if you do it online, they will price match any website that has a physical store in the UK.

I can't remember exactly how it went, but when I tried to price match in the Oxford st store, they came back with a totally different price to price match with, and insisted that's the price they got from their own findings, I think I had to pay full price and got a refund... not as easy as you would with Evans or CycleSurgery etc.

  • Ah right, I didn't realise this - I'm normally lazy and if they're not loads more I'll just shut up and pay it!

  • I saved over £100 on a camcorder and £40 on the headphones I just bought... price matched from website I have never heard of and probably would not have shopped with them...

  • Testing my Bose quietcomfort 25 right now, so far so good... very comfortable for sure. Think I am gonna have a better flight this time with some proper headphones...

  • I don't understand the need for noise cancelling. Are you wearing them without any music on?

  • not really aimed at you - just in general, like

  • I used to wear my HD-25's in the office without music, just to shut some of the noise out. I'd love a pair of proper noise cancelling, but can't justify the price tag

  • You can achieve a lower music volume level when you have noise cancelling, as in theory it gives you a better signal-to-noise ratio. Try it (I personally just use earbuds).

  • yeah - i have just been reading about it. interesting.

not sure it would convince enough to spend the extra dough. i'd just crank it up. but then my headphones leak like a motherfucker when they are really going.

  • Assuming you don't get tinnitus, then that's ok.

  • i don't think i'd need it that loud to cover off the humm of a flight

  • But the active noise cancelling is just counteracting ambient noise with an opposing frequency right? So it's additive and messes with SQ - I've listened to them - tried the BOSE extensively - and I really cannot see the point*. I also got a weird pressure feeling in my head that I didn't like. And I know sound is personal, but I don't like the way BOSE always engineers their products to mess with the audio and change the sound to be "better" According to their research...

In ears, with good tips that seal well, perfectly and passively attenuate background noise and you can listen at much lower volumes, with all the detail of the music present.

Or for over ears - try the audio technica ath-m50 - passive noise cancellation by being an enclosed design and at £100 will be better sounding than the bose IMO.

*If you're a frequent traveller, and don't like things jammed in your head - then I can see the point.

  • Is this why i got a funny felling when I tried my bose on last night?? I thought I was just getting pressure headache from a long day at work...

  • Anybody have any experience of these headphones?

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00N3WWG4U/ref=gno_cart_title_0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE

They are to use in my office at work so other than sound quality it is important that they do not leak any sound and are comfortable for wearing hours on end.
They seem a little pricey but the reviews are mostly positive

  • Probably just a long day - I dunno, I have nothing more than my experience to go on.
I wouldn't worry till the nose bleeds start...
