Earphones / Headphones: Where to try, what to buy?

  • Has anyone got a good recommendation for some rugged in-ear headphones. I've been through about 6 pairs of AIAIAI Pipes that I keep replacing for free at the Apple store, as they only last about 8 months.

Obviously everyone is raving about the E10's for a budget option, but does anyone use them while riding*? Are they tough enough to be jostled around in a pocket and used for a good 5-6 hours a day at work?

    *boring scolds fuck off.

  • E10s with Comply Foam tips are great while riding, mine are either in my pocket or in my ears, I never seem to put them down.

I wear them all the time I'm at work, on the bike, on the train, while I'm sleeping, I find them better than the RHA MA350s ever were, and I thought they were a revelation.

  • I have just picked up a set of Sennheiser Momentum (over-ear) and they are incredible.

They knock the Hd25s they replaced out the park in the general listening department and (importantly) they are infinitely more comfortable.

I had the chance to listen to them side by side before buying them which showed quite a contrast.

Sennheiser knocked 60 beans off retail, too, which was a bonus.

  • I have a pair of DUNU Tridents DN12. They've got a lovely warm, balanced sound with rich bass. Really great for the low price.

  • Oh wow, that's a p glowing review.

Quick Qs - are the cables symmetrical? does it have a microphone/controller thingy?

  • Cables are symmetrical and they're that anti tangle insulation that all new headphones seem to have too.

Mine don't have the microphone or buttons but I believe there is an E10 model with that available. A quick search of Amazon shows that they're a bit pricier than the standard E10, but the 2012 E10M is still available for a bargainous £20.

Make sure you buy the Comply Foam tips though, they really make the difference.

  • Exactly there are always cars behind you. There shouldnt be no difference to the way you ride if u can hear a car come behind you, as you should always keep your space and not be weaving around everywhere. Whats the excuse once silent electric cars are rolled out?
Vision, common sense and spacial awareness is key. Oh and not headphones that COMPLETELY block out ambient noise.

  • I've always used Sony MDR-ED21LP Groove Shaped Earpiece headphones, because they have amazing loudness and clarity, but more importantly - fit in the ear perfectly without blocking external ambient noises out.
I find these new 'plug' headphones block everything out which is not ideal riding in London.

  • I was thinking of trying to build something that would attach to my saddle and would feed back some of the ambient noise from rear/sides when I'm riding. I got weird ears and it's nearly impossible to use any "normal" headphones, so I only have fairly isolating IEMs.
I don't listen to anything on the bikes anymore, because, even if a car coming behind should not affect my driving, it often startles me and I feel it could set me of course...

  • Bought some E10's based on the commendations on here; straight out of the box I was impressed. I'm not an audiophile but I was surprised to hear such detail and clear differentiation between ranges. Bass is smooth and deep, very satisfying.
I haven't gone full hog and bought the foam buds that were suggested, but pretty chuffed with the E10's as they are so may invest in those at a later date.
Also, I wreck headphones and it seems one speaker always dies first, probably because I jam them in my pockets and exercise with them a lot. Luckily these come with a hard, compact carrying case that should protect them from my oafish treatment.

  • What colour did you choose?

  • I been looking at these

With glowing reviews. Compares them to the momentum

  • brown

  • Best bang for buck noise cancelling? Flying long-haul next week, and I found engine noise very noticable last time I flew with by bose AE2s. Not looking to replace them per se, but if there is an effective option that won't break the bank I may well pick them up?

  • At £300, i'd get a pair of B&W P5's instead... they're £50 cheaper, review the same as the aedle and wont make you look as much of a dick.

I've had a pair for 2 years and they're fantastic.

  • im out

because googling them i find the first image is of some hipster dick

No idea if that worked or not but internal security seems to block hipsters

  • Dude... do you even google.

Surely they'd go perfectly with your "image"

  • google b&w p5 and this is close enough....

    hipsters

  • And what about the ones you were looking at buying?

I'm sure it'll be accountants and librarians buying them. What with all that brushed aluminium and needlessly brown leather. That picture from your post with all of its soft focus etc. Screams hipster.

  • i cant see it...

I used the preferences of the image to post it. I cant view it due to internal security block probably because its from reddit.

So i have no idea what youre talking about.

  • anyone got any recommendations for a cheap / sweat and rain proof / secure gym + riding headphones?

    black and in-ear, preferably.

  • if i was to get a pair id get these

Klipsch Image S4i Rugged In Ear

good reviews but still 60 notes

  • In-ears with Comply Isolation tips. Passive noise cancellation is so much better than active.
I use klipsch x10i with the comply foam tips on all my long haul flights - never had an issue. Reduces all noise to a very background low level. Even when I'm not listening to music or watching anything I generally have them in because they block out the noise. And they're comfy for 12+ hours.

  • I'd rather have them linked up to my phone, I think, so I can take calls if necessary.

I'm kind of tempted by some Yurbuds for inexpensive rain-proof riding 'phones. Nothing flashy but probably robust enough.

I just went and looked at the E10s on my lunch; can't get over how plasticy and horrid the cables are? Just seems like they'd pull apart. Can I justify some HRA MA750i's just for ignoring people in the office? Not entirely sure whether I want 1 or 2 pairs, if you see what I mean.
