  • Can anyone recommend some cheap and cheerful but half decent earbuds for running?

What's up with the bone conducting things, any good? I'm dubious

  • The bone conduction ones are excellent depending on what you want
    They won’t fall out
They don't block out the rest of the world, so easy to hear traffic etc
The sound is… ok. Good enough but certainly not audiophile.

I’ve got the Shokz ones and prefer running with them over AirPods Pro. I wouldn’t use the bone conduction ones if I wasn’t running though

  • Brill, thanks. I might give them a go then, I'm happy with good enough. I'm intrigued as to how they sound. I'm guessing an average earbud would generally sound better?

I’m actually looking at the same thing right now.

I tried a couple last night in John Lewis. Pros: the fit is excellent, they’re comfortable, they don’t move around and won’t move while you’re running. Cons: obvs not audiophile, no bass. The no bass thing is the dealbreaker for me.

Tried some over head earphones (over ear and on-ear) but they’re quite heavy and bounce around quite a lot on your head.

Maybe thinking earbuds with a wire around the back is a good idea, so if one does come out it won’t bounce off somewhere. Potentially Beats Flex but I’m a tiny bit concerned about the fit and sound quality. Also Sennheiser CX Sport but my concern with those is the size of the volume control bit bouncing around on the wire.

I think ideally it needs to be in-ear earbuds with a band around the back of the head like the bone conducting ones have.

  • I'm with Duncs on this one - I use my Shokz for running/riding as my first choice. Sound is going to be much better through with some nice buds (bass lacking). I have the normal Openruns (was watching the £££s at the time - still am), but the Pros sounded much better when I tried them. Battery life is decent too.

  • Cheers all, that's helpful. I guess I should probably go and test some out, I didn't think of that, the clue is in title of the thread!

  • Anyone tried TRN earphones? Looking at getting the BA16 but there's precious little out there on the web about them..

  • Weirdly, I find my bone conduction headphones get better once I sweat a bit. My theory is like an ultrasound, you need some fluid between the conductor and your skin. I have the waterproof ones and they sound much better in the pool too which reinforces my theory. When you try them out in the shop, maybe give them a lick first to get the best experience :D

  • Why didn't I think of that!

  • Safer (and easier) to lick your temples and the bits behind your ears rather than the headphones.

  • Shokz bone conductors are great for spoken word & safer when running or cycling. Pretty bad for music, but I'm nerdy than most about that.

The newer ones also last - the older gen needed replacing every 6 months (but I use them every day).

  • I rate Beats Flex for general use and have run in them. Sound fine and come with various earbud tips for getting a good fit. The neck band may bounce around a tiny bit depending on how you run I guess. I choose these because they can hang round your neck all day and don’t get lost.

  • Over ear wired whats good cba reading the whole thread i sold my hd 25’s years ago

good sound, customisable options, replaceable parts, enviro conscious company

  • Seconded I bought some at Christmas, very good

  • i lost my sure se215s :( really loved them as they were comfatable and sounded great are there any similar or better for a similar price or sholud i just go back to the se 215s ?

  • It never crossed my mind that i could have vegan headphones that can be recycled but i guess that makes sense.

  • I have a pair of SE215 I've not used in a while. Going rate on eBay seems to be £40
    £30 posted?

  • I feel the following will probably be anathema to this thread but:

2.4ghz wireless audio with wireless charging. Kind of tempted with buds like the Razer Hammerhead Pro Hyperspeed because small and I don't love wearing over-ear all day - but equally it's what I've done for the past 20 years so... Also, those buds have poor battery life - would want to realistically run much of the day and the only way to charge would be to put it in the charging box and leave it there for a while.

So... am I really limited to the A50X for 2.4ghz/wireless charging/decent spatial sound for games?

I currently have the G Pro X which I haven't been particularly impressed with and isn't charged wirelessly for starters:

I don't need a mic, just good, latency free (or near-as) audio with accurate direction. And relatively comfortable for full days of editing / full nights of gaming.

  • I got the Sony WH-1000XM5 as recommended by @photoben and it's true they really do block out the Victoria line. Much better then the Soundcores I had before. App isn't the best, but TBH I've hardly used it, just set and forget really.

  • I was weighing up the XM4 against the Momentum 4 and went with the Sennheisers, which I've pretty much always had, but by all accounts I would have been happy with the Sony too.

  • Yes please :)

  • After a bit of research and wanting a low ohm value for field recording i have chosen a set that have been used widely in the industry.
    Sony MDR 7506 Professional Headphones

  • I forget the specific model but I used to have a set of MDRs - brilliant sound and very comfortable (I think 7520?). The headband/hook connection did however break a few months after buying and Sony and/or retailer weren't great about getting them repaired so I stuck it out with gaffer tape for a while before moving to another brand. csb.

  • I might just stick amalgamation tape on straight away.
