  • cheaper to change the 16T down but much bigger jump in gearing than changing the ring

have look at Gear Inch calculator to see the impact

Thanks mate. Will take a look once I have had a read up on what the gear inch business is all about! I see you all talk about it when discussing gear ratios but I really don't have a clue!

  • Just started riding my aero track which is 48-17, which is a big change from my 48-19 which I have been riding a lot on my steamroller. I feel like a pansy finding 74" grindy. Need to get some miles in on this new ratio.

  • First trip on 50/18 back from South drinks- spinny as a spinny thing.

Lots of go off the line but little top end without washing machine impersonations.

  • You only have to do 138rpm to reach 30mph, or 115rpm to hit 25mph - that's fast enough in town, init?

  • Hi guys. I'm running as it came out the box; 42:16. As a real novice, perhaps I can ask your advice? I want more speed on the flats. I don't mind making it a little harder on the inclines which I suppose I have to have if I want the extra speed. Is my first step to reduce the 16 or increase the 42?

As I said in the other thread.. stick with it for a while.

    Some people don't deserve spinny.

    69" is teh awesome.

It'd be a rare (and probably soon injured) rider that averages 30kph for anything over 2k IN London.

  • We've established it's not spinny. I wouldn't even call it whirly. Lackadaisical?

  • I dunno.. these overgearies.. coming over here taking our jobs.. ruining our health service.. bloody immigrants.

  • Sanguine I'd call it.

  • Is that like mulled wine?

  • I think it's verging on melancholic (which isn't a fruit flavoured cocktail).

  • I'll second melancholic- 73 gear inches.

Jaygee wept, what has my Achilles brought me too?

  • Things start to get more stoical in the 75-78" range...

  • anything less than 75" is pre-socratic

  • 39-45" is anti-semitic.

  • 42" is the answer to ultimate question of gear inches..

  • 50:20
The first couple of rides I thought I would have to change it, but over a couple months I have gotten used to it. I like being spinny, it makes me feel like im winning the race.
    +skids are easier

  • Do you not go through tyres pretty quick with that ratio. 50:20 = only 2 skid patches I think.

  • I have a front brake too. I only really skid for fun or when its raining (for extra fun).

  • 48-17

rockin it. easy to control speed and shit.

  • 46-17 fine for riding all day, fine for going up and down hills, fine for skiding, fine for not being too spinny, fine for not being to grindy..... for me.

  • Eight pages of people giving the gear ratio's of their bikes?

What a waste of the internet.

  • 46:16 on the cobbled streets of Auld Reekie. Fun times with all the fucking tourists at this time of year.
