44 : 16 on the road
46 : 20 trick bike ,< this gear is also good on the road if your riding at a relaxed speed as it makes it easy to get away from lights ect. quickly -

My legs are already the size of tree trunks.
50/16 and its a bit spinny sometimes

48:16 - 78ish (Fast road fixed bike)
46:18 - 67ish (New road runabout)Tbh I'm finding the 67 gear way too spinny. Will keep it on for a bit to see of it does anything good for my leg speed!

I was riding 48/16, moved up to 50/16, had my bike nicked and will soon be back to 48 again.

Like, when you're doing >30mph?

it was a bit tongue in cheek...
I find it pretty good really, the only time it bugs me is hill starts.

'Spinny' is relative, if you are used to pushing big gears then anything faster than slowly grinding the cranks around can feel 'spinny'.
I am used to 48/14 now, it feels ok, but 48/15 and 48/16 feel very 'spinny' to me - even when tootling along the road at 10mph.

'Spinny' is relative to the norms established amongst the entire population of fixed gear riders.
What you're feeling is not 'spinny'. Possibly 'a bit less grindy'.
Dunno. You'll have to adopt another adjective.

How about:
"I've become so used to just whacking it in the 53x11 for the sprint, I'd forgotten how whirly the 13t feels."

That's much better. Whirly.
I ride a rather whirly GI, it's 67 and I like it.
Whirly :D

Im down with whirly for sure. I've been getting whirly on a bike im building at the moment on a 48/18... now that is quite spinny (actually spinny) at points.

53 X 14 most of the time, maybe 53 X 18 for the short climbs round here.

I currently run a 49 x 18. I have run 53, 52, 51, 50 x 19, 48 x 15, 42 x 16 and have found they all give me around the same average speed for my 67km round trip to work. It's just some ratios make the hills and head winds easier, whilst others are better for the flats. It's riding fixed, it's all an excellent compromise.
Recently switched from ss to fixed - from 18/48 to 16/48. Being more than a bit of pie lardass has led to me sweating like a pig on some journeys and seriously thinking that I wasn't gonna make it home. I may have to switch to a 44 tooth chainring during this baptism of fire...
