cross tyres, on and off road -

46 x 19: nice and versatile, might switch to 46:17 now im hitting the country lanes less tho
-
• #1080
52:17 for flat only, plus I hardly ride in the city, no problem. Sometimes I want to gear up because it what I feel will be comfortable, sometimes its a pain in the ass riding against heavy winds.

42/17 - hey, am an oldie with some hills to conquer.

53:14 on 3 speed fixed. Hit 37mph (on a descent).

It's only about 120rpm, unless you forgot to change into top gear.

I don't think I'd want to spin much more than that. (Reading taken from bike computer)
I also had a route tracker on android that said my max speed was 66.5kmh (41.5mph) Not sure that this accurate tho ;P

I was running 48/17 (74.2 GI & 17 skid patches) up until a couple of weeks ago. Found myself getting uncomfortable around 30/35 for any long period of time.
Changed to 46/15 (80.6 GI & 15 skid patches) now which is a lot more comfortable at higher speeds for longer periods, although maybe not the best on the daily commute.
I plan on getting a 16T cog to swap out if I know I'll be doing more climbs, or even for my daily commute. That'll give me 75.6 GI and still 8 skid patches.

Currently 46/16
Going to mount a 17 on the other side this weekend. I feel too fast with riding with the average cyclist. Additionally, Munich is quite a populous city with many cyclists and riding at high speed can lead to many close misses..
But on the other hand, I'd like to give it a try with 15/14/13... teeth on the back. You know, thanks to the "Autobahn" culture here in Germany, it is fucking unbelievable how fast the people love to drive their cars here. And dangerous, but many do know how to drive a car, though... -

What a laugh.
After my post from last night, I proceeded to ride 46/15 today.
It was actually worth it. Felt more like being a mad man on the roads. But it was a pain in the arse to get of from full stops. It isn't really a good ratio for commuting during the busy hours. It just takes too much energy and a loooong time to accelerate.
That counts for the city.
Since I stay in the far outskirts of Munich and have got several kilometres to cover before I actually begin to feel like being in the big city, it was quite a relieve to have the bigger ratio. That does pay off for longer distances. -

one seriously bodged transmission, are they poor?

Ah, the chain tension bodge. Never seen it in the flesh
-
• #1099
Never seen it used like that, although the ghost ring is considered a reasonable option for tensioning the primary chain on a tandem. A quick google suggests that it's actually in quite common use as an adjustment to find a magic gear on conversions with vertical dropouts.
This one, though, is spectacularly pointless:

It looks like they've used it just to be a bit different. There's plenty of room on those sliding dropouts to move the wheel
I was running 52x19, which is 73.1 (with 28c) but I'm finding it tough as I'm out of flat London now and in hilly Hertfordshire. Onto 48x19, which is 67.4 but may go down to 48x18 to try 71.2 depending on how my legs are coping.
