Fight the Power: How Hip Hop changed the world - Series 1 - Ep 1. Foundation
A much documented story around the birth of a movement, a history lesson, call for social justice and change.
However, a timely reminder from the old skool heroes we love and admire.
Well done BBC, a lot of content just in the first episode.

đź‘Źđź‘Ź maybe my favourite rapper.
One of the very best for me. Aside from his beats and flow, which are epic, he's also slightly mad and doesn't take it 100% serious whilst at the same time taking it really seriously. Black Elvis/Lost In Space is so, so good.

I really thought the bbc did a good job of the hip hop doc. my only criticism is that they could have balanced the very important way it tied to the civil rights and black power movement to hip hop with more of an acknowledgment of hip hop’s multi culturalism. There was mention of the young lords, and mention that there was both caribbean and african american culture involved at the start; and there was interviews with 2(?) latino artists, but it should have been more explicit.
secondly, the crucial document that indicted the reagan regime in a conspiracy to vilify POC through the war on drugs was only shown, it wasn’t read out or described. that means this fact would have only reached a small proportion of the audience, most watching wouldn’t bother or wouldn’t be able to quickly read a text that flashes up on screen. to me that document is absolutely explicit - it was federal policy to produce a consensus against poc in america. -

Got a bum education, double-digit inflation / Can’t take a train to the job, there’s a strike at the station.
The first rap line I can recall
Hip-hop is creativity and activity that comes out of the black neighbourhood when everything has been stripped away

Any music documentary with ambitions to inform as well as entertain is a trade-off between sociology and musicology

Jam Baxter, nutcase but compelling listening. I had it on vinyl and sold it. I sell a lot of the High Focus releases that I buy because they fetch good money after the initial release.
This album is decent too :-

I have it on vinyl as well but don't sell any of mine!
The quality of artists on High Focus is incredible when you look at who they have.
I agree, Eagle Court is a good album.

Thanks! That's a great insight into what makes Kool Keith such a standout in hiphop. A proper individual, doing his own thing.
