I laced a 20h wheel 2 cross. Prob less/equally daft as radial? As long as the spoke heads are clear shouldn’t be an issue surely.. and if they aren’t then 1x?

Got some 26er rims that I want to put on some new hubs to allow for a 10/11 speed cassette for a retro mtb build. Anyone fancy a project?! or alternatively got good N. / E. London shop recommendations?
Thanks!

Put a dab on the nipple before you start. As you turn the nipples it will work its way down. Cant hurt
-
• #9680
After about 90 degrees turning a nipple definitely will hurt.

Turkish
All the nipple twisting is now done sadly,
with 4 sets to deal with,
I didn't bother taking the tyres off.
I 'll do lit now,
my daugher had a look at wheel mending,
she needs practise on taking tyres off.

I twisted a lot of them at more than 90 degrees,
no apparent hurt. -

That’s weird, mine sometimes hurt just from my shirt rubbing against them.

I’m also searching for a good wheelbuilder in east... Shout me if you get the hot tips.

Anyone have experience with the H Plus Son TB14 rims?
Look nice for a more classic build, don't mind the anodizing wearing off. -
• #9685
They’re nice but pricey.
I spent ages trying to find them in 32H silver and gave up. Distributor confirmed 3-4months until stock so I went with the kinlin adhn from @broken_777 and have been very happy with them and only a fraction of the price.

Afternoon all, looking at trying to build my own wheels. I'm trying to fix an old peugeot in the chespest way i can. Can't find any cheap second hand wheels for the life of me. Is there a guide anywhere about how to build wheels and also what parts i need? Can you build a flip flop hub wheel?

Yes, and you have found it. Read the last hundred pages or so of this thread and get back to us if you still have questions.

Would any of y’all be concerned by the distortion in the diagonal face on the rim by the spoke holes?
Rim is from an Aksium Disc front wheel but I built to a rear DT Swiss track hub. They are 24h. Been built for around a year. Not sure when the distortion occurred.
Spoke tension doesn’t seem anything out of the ordinary but I don’t have a meter to measure it.
The inward face of the rim seems fine.

Bollocks.
Matter of time till they rip themselves out ?

After building my first set with it I will definitely be getting a second clock, and roller contact points like these , but all in all it worked quite well.

Good call.
and roller contact points like these
I've got a roller contact point on the lateral run-out DTI, but on the hop DTI I've got a round bar about 35-40mm wide. I think it would be quite annoying having a narrow roller on the hop DTI, especially as I tend to concentrate on hop before run-out, so the rim can be moving around laterally quite a lot at that stage. Pic below.

Yay!

That's a very good point, will do this. Did you buy it somewhere or did you make it yourself?

Made it myself. It's just a length of alloy bar with the ends rounded off and a hole drilled in it. It's just glued onto the shaft of the DTI with good old JB Weld.

How you getting on? This thread might be a long read. Sheldon Brown is a free place to look for some info. Sounds like you want to build a fixed or single wheelset.
Essentially you'll need: (and maybe these suggested cheap but OK ones in brackets)
Spokes (Alpina)
Nipples (usually come with spokes)
Rims (ADHN or Sputnik for heavy duty)
Pair of track hubs with sealed bearings (look at Formula, Novotec, Ambrosio Zenith, SJS, Condor, Sturmey Archer - these are all much of a muchness)
A wheel jig (there are some cheap ones around, plenty of people here make them from ply and stuff if you're handy)
or
A frame & fork to use as a makeshift jig, with some bits of gaffer tape to create some guages
A spoke key that fits the nipples ('Spokey' red probably)
Some boiled linseed oil
Lots of time and patience. -

linseed oil
I concur with the rest of your post, but I've never felt the need to engage the services of Linsey Doyle when building wheels.
-
• #9697
Heh. Now I have to google Linsey Doyle I guess.
I was just trying to be encouraging.

Do you use a different oil or no oil at all?
-
• #9699
I've used grease in the past, but then the wheels I've built were mostly for bike polo hence getting regular attention.

You should use some lubricant, to help minimise spoke wind-up. I use Mobil 1 engine oil.
I have massaged a whole household of beater wheels to a healthy state of tension and trueness.
On a new wheelset I am used to apply linseed oil on threads,
is it recommended to use it on old wheels?
I doubt it will find it's way in the treads now.
Maybe light thread lock or nail varnish?
