How good are your existing spoke lengths and at what tension? Both factors can sometimes provide a bit of leeway.

It might not make a difference, but putting the washers in first is insurance against the nipple bottoming out. I'd probably risk not using them if lacing 3-cross.
Only slightly weird thing about that build would be using washers on an eyeleted rim. -

Spoke length...
How do I work out what spoke lengths I need for these rim and hub combinations?
Rim:Kinlin TL-23 650B

Measure the rim ERD. Measure the hub flange PCDs and the distance of the flanges from the centre of the hub. Plug the results into the Edd spoke calculator, choose your number of spokes and crossings and Bingo Bango, correct spoke lengths. Plenty out info out there on measuring ERDs and hub dimensions.

Thanks for the pointers

Where should I look online to get spokes of a specific length (type: black Sapim CX-Ray, or comparable)? I can find spokes all over the place, sometimes specific lengths are very cheap, but few places seem to have the full range. Is there something like the 'go to' place for this kind of thing?

cyclebasket is very good. postage is pricey but fast
-
• #8111
Starbike is where I usually go for CX-Rays.
-
• #8113
Singletrack bikes seem to have good spoke stock, not sure about cx ray.

Bike24 for cx rays
for cheapness cn spoke 424 are close to cx ray dimensions and found on ebay

Thanks, I'll check those out. Bike24 I already checked out, but they seem to only have spokes that are too long, I'm using deep rims so the ERD is comparatively low.

Thanks - they don't have the right lengths unfortunately :)

Maybe it is easier if you post the lengths you need :)

Haha fair enough - as I calculated it with a number of spoke length calculators and assuming the spoke ends 1mm above / 'inside' the carbon rim (I can't find the exact number for the likes of Sapim Polyax nipples), I'd need 225.5mm for the front (radial) - so 226mm? - and 242.5mm for the rear (2x) - so 243mm? I'm thinking about using the Sapim HM nipple washers too, with which I assume it'd be better to round up.
And as I mentioned, I'd be looking for the black (J-bend) version.
http://www.customcutspokes.co.uk claim they have all lengths, but they are £2.95 a piece.
http://www.spokesfromryan.com also claims to have all lengths, at £2.45 a piece. But no idea how reliable any of those web shops are!

I have bought short lengths from https://247cycleshop.com but at 3pounds so thats probably the price
...so back to starbike!

Spoke prob 'ends' a bit deeper inside the wheel than 1mm. Spoke bed on carbon rims is usually about 3mm thick, then you need to add the height of the nipple base/flange, and HM Washer adds 0.7mm.
Also, Ryan on Ebay (in Bristol) charges about £2.50 per custom cut spoke, with nipples in whatever colour you want. -

plus rounding the length down to an even number is pretty standard
-

the height of the nipple base/flange
That's the measurement I meant. The 3.5mm thickness of the carbon rim itself is of course already included. The .7mm from the washers is why I'm thinking I should definitely be rounding up from that half millimetre. (makes sense here, no? @svenhöek )
Do you know what exact value I should take for the nipple base if I'm using Sapim Polyax, or the same measurement for DT Swiss Standard nipples?
Ryan on Ebay (in Bristol) charges about £2.50 per custom cut spoke
Oh great, so he's legit then I assume. Because so far that's the best price I could find within the UK at least.

2mm for nipple head + 0.7mm for washer + rim data .
round the final result up or down to even number (mostly down)
or measure REAL ERD with 2 spokes and 2 nipples and 2 washers
It's not to late, still waiting for the rim to arrive, thanks for the info. Would 0.7mm difference really need to be taken up? Or would it not be an issue? First build so still trying to get my head round everything
