I'm currently in the process of speccing some wheels for a new single speed road bike I'm planning. The current plan is Superstar Pave 28/Kinlin XC279 rims and Mack low flange hubs held together with good old CX-Rays. The front wheel is going to have 20 spokes, because that's what most of my road wheels have and I can't see why this should need more. Any reason to go for more than 24 spokes on the rear? Almost all my road wheels have 24 spokes on the rear (except for the RS80s which have only 20) and I can't see why being single speed rather than geared should require more spokes. Current weight is 80kg, but slowly decreasing.

Cheers for flagging - I will let the wife know (I've been banned buying myself stuff in December due to the tendency of spoiling Christmas present from the missus)

Anyone used one of these before? I saw that too and am very intrigued.
Although it doesn't seem to have something for checking the radial runout like the Tester-Approved Minoura FT-1... -

I want to bother to get some practice building a wheel.
Start with an easy 32 holes wheels rather than diving into the deep end with factory build low spoke count wheels.

Just lower and close the arms a bit.

Yeah, I just thought of that as I was riding home.
Anyone got one of these - are they any good? -

Mate has one, seemed fine although I just poked at it and never used it, essentially a park copy.

Using 24 cx-ray spokes is like making a wheel with 16 1.8mm dt comp spokes.
Maybe use 24 dt aero comps instead. -> http://www.bike24.com/1.php?content=8;product=81815;menu=1000,2,302,303 -

Plenty of 24 spoke rear road wheels survive with CX-Rays or equivalent, and @danstuff should have less dish as he's building a singlespeed. The RS80s actually have more spoke cross section on the drive side rear than 12 CX-Rays, so if he's aiming for a similar amount of metal the AeroComp is a good suggestion.

The laser spokes are jot them problem. Used thousands they are good spokes but a stiff rim must be used and hubs with good bracing angles. Superstar components have those qualities. The wheel build quality needs to top notch as well. Even spoke tension and 1200N Ds rear tension. Obey the rules and laser work. Disregard them and the break.

24 cx rays for that single speed wheel Dan stuff will be fine.

Someone wanted me to have a go at lacing a 32 hole hub to a 24 hole rim. I know it's possible and saw some options after doing some searches. But erred on the side of caution and declined.

Where can I get 13 gauge (2.3 mm) spokes at a good price? Saw a job lot going on ebay but they didn't have the lengths I wanted. They are for a build that has a single layered rim so am rounding down a good 2mm to prevent protrusion (hate having to file down). 284mm x 108 required. Any leads?

Not sure what price you want but I sometimes use Graham from Tiller Cycles, he can do custom spoke lengths in 13g Sapim Leader.

Also Dylan from PIM can perhaps do this.

Got some A.C.I. - Sacchetti aero spokes in...will report back on how they build.
Look well finished with a good sharp bend near the spoke head for good bracing angles.

Anyone got a good source of some proper skinny spokes? Like 15/17 or 15/16 would do I guess. Building a pair of 40/32h Airlites and don't want the rear to look like an MG.
Also on the hunt for a vintagey box section 700c grey ano 32h that might look OK paired with a Mavic MA40.

Great, thanks. I'll make a note of those.

I can get one for you, a NOS Mavic MA40 700c 32 hole in grey. A supplier I know has only one left in stock but it will cost around £30 so maybe a bit more than you want to pay. PM if you're interested.

http://www.sapim.be/spokes/butted/super-spokes are 15/17/15, although 40 is not by any means a high spoke count and will look perfectly fine with Sapim Race or DT Comp

Thanks @mdcc_tester, I had seen that spoke before, then forgot about it.
Perhaps you're right, might just go DTSwiss 15/16/15 so I don't have to do this (according to Sapim re' Super Spokes:)
Use only aluminum nipples from Sapim. They will reduce the friction on the thread thanks to the Sapim’s special coating that reduces the torsion on the spoke.
Yep 30 holes ;) hip hip hip hop
And now triforce G
