  • Interesting, didn't think of that. Was debating re-tightening it or just ditching the spoke and replacing it. The later being somewhat unattractive as cx-rays cost £4.50 delivered. But should my life hand in the balance then I suppose it might be worth the cost.

  • Tighten it up, at worse it'll go again and you can replace it then.

  • Although polo wheels are not the same as a wheel with cx-rays.

  • Does the wheel still clear the brake pads with one spoke gone? That's always my worry with low spoke count wheels, and I'd probably swap it out for peace of mind. Don't want it to go in the middle of nowhere and not be able to even roll carefully back to civilisation

  • Didn't clear the brake pads. I went back to my flat and swapped the wheel for another. I've lost a spoke on a 24h rear wheel and managed to ride it, but I think with a 20h front it would be impossible.

Such is the price for such awesome weenie aero goodness

  • If you build the wheel right and use suitable components spokes should not break.

  • 293mm are available in silver in sapim race and sapim laser. These are not hard to find. I look on my shelf surely other places have them too. In black sapim laser is available. Looks like you are building a front wheel so lasers would be o.k but race is even better for this rim it not very stiff. Spoke calc which is the same as Leonard is never wrong. The dt Swiss calculator always come up 1 mm to long and you have to spend more time tensioning.

  • Question for anyone who has built up a DT Swiss R460 rim. Any comments on their quality? Do they come up round? Is the rim joint smooth?

  • Tx!

I got Alpina spokes at 294 it's for a beater type wheel. Sounds like I may pay for that in time tensioning... ;)

  • Ideas for a fixed wheelset for winter commuting?

The main thing I'm stuck on is rims, but I thought I'd also ask about hubs and if there is already a cheaper OTP option.

In an ideal world I'd like rims that are:

    • not too heavy (sub 500g)
    • wide
    • silver
    • 32/36h drilling
    • suitable for rim breaking
    • inexpensive
    • low / box-like profile

The obvious choice is a Mavic A319 (the A719 being a bit pricey and impossible to find in silver). But I was wondering if anyone had another suggestion (H+ Archetypes are not an option)?

Re hubs: is there anything low profile better than the usual On-One offerings?

    Cheers.

  • Keep it cheap and stick with the Mavics. Or Rigida Sputnik, but they're heavier.

  • You're probably right.

I was also toying with the idea of Kinlin XR19W. They've got eyelets too (which on low section rims might look cool). I previously wanted to try Velocity Dyads, but everyone has seems to slate Velocity's QC so much that I wouldn't bother now.

Next quesiton is whether anyone knows of a track hub that's a colour match for a silver/grey 105 5600 hub?

  • Speaking of the Kinlin XR19W...

... does anyone have an opinion on using them in a 28h build for a 70-80kg person for general summer fixed riding?

(also half looking for a wider rim to re-build my nice fixed wheels onto instead of the CD Open Pros)

  • Are the on-one hubs still available? Couldn't find them last time I looked...

  • The Mk2 ones are, which FWIW look a lot nicer than the old Mk1 ones

Oh. Only front 32h in black. So maybe not so uselful

  • Sorry, meant I couldn't find the rear ones.

Wonder who does the next lowest price re-brand...

  • Ah sorry. What holes / colour are you looking for a rear in? I have a spare 32h black which I picked up recently as a spare which I could part with I guess.

    Otherwise these look good?

  • After 32h, not fussed about colour... if you'd be ok to post up to Manchester that'd be sweet! Otherwise those Tensile things look pretty good for the money :)

  • Have a look at the tensile ones as I'd like to hold onto mine, but if you hit a dead end let me know and I'll see what I can do

  • Novatec BDW from eBay. I've got OnOnes and these and much prefer the bolt up.

  • Good idea. I'd forgotten about those.

Any idea of the internal width?

On the hub point, I hadn't looked about yet. If the On-ones werent around I was thinking about some low flange ones off eBay.

  • No more than what Goggle will tell you: I've bookmarked them, so must seen them touted by someone in the know in this thread.
