Seems odd to carry a brake track around when I won't be using it. Doesn't it?
-
• #3153
Yes, but the market for purely disc brakes rims focuses on tubeless rims for cyclocross, which are a different breed from clincher rims for commuting... firstly they are much more expensive, lighter, occasionally much more fragile (Iron Cross, CL 25 etc..) and might not be suitable for road tyres (Crest, Iron Cross etc... ).
To be honest, Archetype is still the best rim for what you want to do

dt 460?
This looks interesting; similar to Flo30 and lighter; equally hard to get hold of rim only although they are used on DT R23 wheelset I think
-
• #3155
They may appear similar to the flo30 but the point of the flos are they're toroidal, developed with CFD modelling and a wind tunnel.

Don't really want to spend Archetype money on commuter wheels. What about something like:

they're toroidal,
All rims are toroidal until they are drilled. Strictly, each rim is a solid toroid, usually with one or more non-intersecting solid toroids subtracted from the volume.

Yet to find a 36h rear fisc brake hub for 11 speed. The dt swiss tk540 is a fine touring and commutor rim. There is ha disc brake version too. Pricey though but worth it for loaded riding.
if you want cheap and robust get thd rigida sputnik. Heavy but its a tough rim But it has a brake trackI think 32h rim will be fine for you and a cheap dt swiss mtb rim like the 465d works just fine with 28mm tyres. That rim may have been renamed though.

I'm looking at building up a new set of wheels, I am thinking archetype's on system ex hubs 32h 3x. Should I be looking at anything else? Also where is cheapest to get spokes in packs rather than individually?
-
• #3161
Archetypes are so dull. The usual german bike shops, Rose, bikediscount.de etc are usually the best for DT Swiss.
-
• #3162
What would you recommend?
-
• #3163
Flow 30s?. Though really they're not gonna do much more than Archetypes at 2x the cost.

Archetypes are so dull.
Is that why you hid yours under Raltechs?

Stop airing my dirty secrets in public

There is a reason why the archetype is a popular rim. It is one of the best. Until something comes along hat is actually better i see no reason not to use it.
Miche hubs are very good too.

Kin lin xc31t is a good option.

Spoke calculator is saying 287.2 mm rear and 287.8 mm front, does this seem correct and 288mm or 286mm spokes?
-
• #3169
286
-
• #3170
288.
286 will be to short and you will ha ve exposed thread... unless you want to use 14 mm nipples, in which case 286
-
• #3171
So which is it? I've ordered DT Swiss Alpine III 286mm with 12mm DT pro lock nipples.
-
• #3172
If the calculations are accurate, they will be a tad short at the front, revealing the threads.., nothing to worry too much about in a front wheel, but aesthetically unappealing

I am building myself some clincher road wheels soon. It will be my third wheelset. First two have been great so far. Both cyclocross wheelsets with Novatec disc hubs built with DT Rev spokes.
As I am going for Shimano 105 5800 groupset I have decided I will go with the hubs as well. I am thinking about pairing them with DT Comp (for extra stiffness compared to Rev spokes right?). But what rim should I go with? I want the most stiff wheelset I can get sub 1800g.
My old road wheelset is Hope Pro III, DT Rev and Velocity A23 (32h 3x) at 1643g. They were a great upgrade from Mavic Aksiums and other budget wheels I have had.
What rims equivalent to A23 (size and weight) should I look for? Preferably something cheaper or better value.
I will probably be running 27c Open Pave tyres on it. I weigh 95kgs and ride gravel etc on my road bike. -

Problem is that you want stiff, light and cheap and of course you need do make a choice.
The 5800 hubs are on the heavy side, so being within 1800 grams with those and DT comp is not an easy task... you'd have to look at Stans 340, which are not meant for someone your size and will not take pressure in excess of 90 PSI with inner tubes.
As for the tyres: have you considered Panaracer Gravel King? Much cheaper than the Vittoria and more robust
-
• #3175
Thank you for your answer. You are probably right. I will stick with A23, as I am really pleased with them. Both looks and performance...
Novatec X-light (317g) + A23 (900g) + DT Comp (382g) = 1600
Novatec X-light (317g) + A23 (900g) + DT Rev (283g) = 1500
Shimano 105 (523g) + A23 (900g) + DT Comp (382g) = 1805
Shimano 105 (523g) + A23 (900g) + DT Rev (283g) = 1706- nipples and spoke washers...
Thinking....
Good tip on the tyres, I didn't know of them.
- nipples and spoke washers...
For commuting 32 is fine...
Some nice rims without silver track come in 36... Archetype for one, Velocity Chukker NMSW, TB 14, A23, Open PRO CD... in fact pretty much all rims come in 36... maybe not the more expensive tubeless rims for CX.
The CL 25 is a bit of a lightweight... I have built a set... good for CX racing, less so for what you want to do.
