  • Spa have them but at £30: I'm sure I only paid £20-odd from Hewitt's.

Fingers crossed DCR come up trumps...

  • I doubt he would stock any at all... it's not exactly a rim that is in demand for custom builds

  • That's what I figured.

I guess I'll have to stump-up for one from Spa.

Curious that stock seems to have dried-up, as Ryde still list them on their site.

  • The thing is the world of hand built wheels has changed a lot over the past 5 years or so. It went from low cost, high mileage wheels for hard core PBP audaxers, tandem riders and tourers to very expensive high end light wheels for race bikers and posers... the result is that the average rim is 50-100 pounds, rather than 20-40... Open PRO used to be high end sunday best, now it's grim weather commuting at best... folks use 500 quid wheels in winter and 2 grand wheels in summer, while just a few years back a pair of Ksyrium were considered a luxury to keep for the Marmotte and a couple of other events only. In this market, Rigida 20 quid rims look a bit out of tune with people's expectations... in fact even Ryde have come out with a range of expensive light rims

  • Truth. I pretty much satisfy all those criteria. Open pros are on my winter shit bike :/

  • What's the consensus on spoke calculators? Getting different results from different sites. Apologies if this has already been mentioned before, not a frequenter here.

  • What's the consensus on spoke calculators?

Not sure if there's a consensus, but I've never gone wrong using the DT one. The most important thing is to take your own measurements - some of the data on the calculators is off, sometimes just common errors and sometimes because manufacturers change specifications without notice.

  • The differences should in decimals, hence irrelevant. As above, use reliable measurements and not some you read on the web. Some manufacturer's numbers are accurate (Novatec for hubs, Velocity for rims) others are not... for instance Archetype is 592 and not 595 as quoted by the manufacturer... Open Pro is 602 and not the spread of numbers you read around on the web. If it's the first time you build a particular rim or hub, measure it yourself, provided you know how to

  • Re Archetypes. Im fairly sure teh change in ERD came after they thickened up the spoke bed. The first b atch of archetypes all weighed 450g, now they are 470.

  • The ERD is 592 and it's always been 592... the 450 grams is a bit of a legend... I have never seen any of that imaginary crop... and I've been building them for over 2 years now... they first landed in the UK in the spring of 2012... I built the first around September 2012... the only thing that changed is the grey was light and matt and now it's dark and shiny

  • Not imaginary. I have two, grey anodised. I weighed them both and they came out at 450g +-2g. I know this because when I built my burls, I weighed everything to satisfy my spreadsheet OCD.

For reference, these were bought in October 2012 from BLB.

  • Fair enough, but the ERD hasn't changed... if yours are lighter and you say thinner inside, then they should have a lower ERD than the current ones (not higher). On all rims I have always measured 592

  • Bought some on-one track hubs and a truing stand now looking for some rims. Settled on some wide ones to see what all the fuss is about, can't find a thread for "which rim" so thought I'd ask here, redirect me if i'm lost.

What are the best budget wide rim options out there?

32h, price>strength>weight is the order of preference but all three matter to some extent, silver if possible.

  • Have you looked at the various £18 options at Spa Cycles?

  • I hadn't, look like exactly what I need. Thanks mate!

  • If you want lightweight and w-----de the planetX has 20% discount on wheels and rims at the moment http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/RIPACL25/pacenti-cl25-rim

  • For disc only presumably? I will be using a brake on the front.

  • KInlin 279... 70 quid for the pair

  • For ur brakeless fixie skidder

Can this novatec A291sb be laced x2? The number of holes is 24h. The cabron provider I am dealing with says no and that this can only be done radially.

Obvs reading the whole thread would answer this for me but I was just wondering if someone had a quick answer. Apols

  • Is the crabon provider saying the hub cant be 2x or the rim? I can't imagine a reason why a hub could take radial but not a crossing pattern.

  • The hub. I said I wanted the front 2x and he said hub wasn't designed for that

  • The spoke flange on the A291sb is pretty small at 30mm, but even so I can't imagine you'd have problems with spokes crossing spoke heads on a 24 hole build. I think crabbon fibber vendor is talking sloblocks.

  • My thoughts exactly

  • Is it an issue with the hub or simply that they don't build 2x wheels (for other reasons)?
