  • I did try to find a cheaper one that's also light, the Pacenti were the closest I can find that's 425g, 10g lighter than the Mavic Open Pro (manufacturer claim).

Archetype (now available via Wiggle) is 470g.

Planet X link to Pacenti that's £30 off.

  • @dom depends how you define brake track, arguably archetypes etc have a brake track because they have slightly thicker walls but that's it, there's no specially machined surface like proper road rims

as far as proper disc specific i think velocity have one now, aleon or something?

  • No idea how old the one I got (from here), but my anodised archetype has a machined brake track

  • Aileron... great rim... not cheap!

The Archetype have a machined brake track like any other rim brake specific rim, the difference is that the anodising is performed post machining rather than before

  • So does mine. The ano is disappearing rapidly in this lovely British weather.

  • @branwen oh, right then, mine don't look like they have a proper machined surface at all then...

@ugosantalucia that's the one! quite heavy too, I'd lean to thinking if you were gonna spend that much just get flo30's

  • flo30s benefits come when used for 23mm tyres and they have material for rim brakes (so aren't light). A disc specific XC 29er rim would be more suitable.

  • Cheers for all the replies.

@drøn those are mad cheap but at 569g they seem heavy compared even to non-disc rims such as the Archetypes mentioned above. So far I'm leaning toward @edscoble 's recommendation of Pacenti CL25 rims; I like the 25mm width. Planet X's 42% off is nice, too.

  • That's the rim @Thuekr recommended on the last page. That rim is more all-mountain than xc so might be heavier than needed.

    Stans make xc rims.

  • Aileron are much lighter than advertised. I've got a couple of sets here... they are about 460 grams, which for a rim that size (25 x 28 mm) is very little more than the equivalent clincher in carbon fibre. They are stunning rims and for once even the stickers are not revolting!

  • They look great. Could make a good fixieskidder / track wheel as well as a discy roady type thing.

  • Built a wheel yesterday, retrued another. Now I've got the urge to build more - but damn I need a reason to build more. Hence coming here to post meaningless rubbish^.

  • Merlin still have Stans 355 and Olympic rims, 26 or 29", 32h at about £50 a pair. Black or white.

Not the current models, but still nice and shiny.

  • The Aileron look better in the flesh... kind of very dark grey brushed metal finish rather than pure black. They are lovely rims... I am building three sets at the moment, will post some photos

  • Did you find a bargain sale for the Aileron?

  • Pretty! Got the rims from the distributor BLB Big Mama

  • Novatec 9/10sp disc hubs:

    D041SB/D042SB weigh a ton

    D521SB/D522SB 580g a pair, loose bearing

    D711SB/D712SB 420g a pair

    D811SB/D812SB 480g a pair

The 71X and 81X seem to be about the same price, £90 inc QRs. 52X about £50 a pair. (eBay prices)

Are there any normal online shops in the EU that stock these at competitive prices, or alternative models/brands I should consider?

Needs to be 100/135QR, disc, 32H.

  • The cycle clinic in Suffolk is on Ebay and sell the 711/712... which have now been superseded by 771/772.
    They are truly awesome hubs

  • The cycle clinic in Suffolk is on Ebay...

He's also "on here": got to be good for a forum discount...

  • 440g a pair, £95.
