  • Delivery for a "skinny"..

Did you order the code red?

  • My front wheel is making a tinkling sound when I'm out of the saddle. Does this mean my spokes are loosing tension? The wheels itself is still true.

Would a few half turns to all the spokes sort this out or is it going to be more effort than that?

The pinging means that somehow the spokes are being plucked. On a newly built wheel that can come from the release of spoke twist, as others have said. Other causes are spokes with too low tension going slack for part of the cycle, or stick-slip motion where spokes weave around one another.

If tension is low, increasing it might help.

Over time spokes fret grooves into one another where they touch at crossing points. As the crossing points move under high loads, the spokes jump in and out of the groove rather than moving smoothly. My worst case of this was when i replaced a rim but used the same spokes in the same places - the old fretted grooves where in almost but not quite the right place in the new build so the spokes were constantly pinging for a while.

You could try cleaning and maybe even greasing the crossovers.

  • On-One hubs are actually cheaper than that as for orders over £20 they don't charge for delivery.

  • Building a wheelset for unsupported brakeless touring [6 countries, 10 days], terrible roads.
on Novatec track hubs, DT Comp, 32h 3x.

  • You're beautiful

  • Not sure that's laced correctly.

  • I'll look into that

  • Large flange P-X track hub, lacing to a 32 h rim - better to go 2x due to bracing angle, or stick with 3x?

  • Front or rear?

  • @Emyr rear (doh, knew I'd forget something important)

  • I'm going 2X 28h on 60mm crabon (see picture above) - with a shallower rim I'd added a cross and/or gone 32 2x/3x

  • Rim is a ~26 mm deep Archytype - so not particularly deep.

  • Hit it with 3X and have complete trust in your brakeless endeavours

  • My 32h Archetypes on Paul high flange hubs are 3x front and rear and I've never needed to true them since they were built nearly 2 years ago.

  • Hi, I'm building a new rear wheel for my cross/road bike but I'm dithering a bit of a lace pattern. I've got a 32h Halo Supa Drive hub and will (probably) use an Open Pro - although if anyone's got any recommendations on road rims in a similar price range let me know!

In the past I've just done 3x for my rear wheels but thought of maybe being a bit more adventuress and going x3 or maybe even 2x drive and radial none drive? Or 1x none drive?

I'm only about 55kgs and I figure as it's 32h this shouldn't be a problem and I've got another wheelset I'll use for more everyday/off road riding - although it's hardly a weight weenie bike and obviously I don't want to be popping spokes after 800 miles.

    Any advice welcome!

  • Go for 3x both sides and enjoy your shiny wheel without worrying about it.

If you'll be using it for CX, you're unlikely to gain much from 1x on the NDS.

  • 2x DS/ rad N-DS is the industry standard on freewheel hubs - get industrial dude.

  • One for sure is a greater head ache from keeping track of all the different spoke length clustering up on the skewed kitchen table.

  • Any advice welcome!

Get a wider rim than an Open Pro.

3X all round for 32spokes, if it's not broken don't try to fix it. You're not searching for marginal gains on a racing wheel, you're trying to build something you can forget about for a few years.

Yeah someone did suggest Archetypes but I've already got some 23c GP4000s and aside from anything else I don't really like the aesthetics of 23s on such wide rims...

I think I'll probably go x3 DS and 1x NDS just to mix it up a bit, I'm sure it'll hold up as it'll mainly be for road use.

I'll read through that tonight which might sway my decision

  • What rim would you suggest in place of an Open Pro?
