didn't the tour start at a time where fixed was all that existed?
-
• #3
They used to run flip-flop fixed till the thirties i believe.
-

The first Tour was in 1903, riders used a 42x21 or 42x22 to 'spin' over the poor road surfaces.

Ok, sorry third post. Originally Tour bikes from 1903 were singlespeed, in 1908 Fixed wheels were made compulsory, Derailleurs were first allowed in 1937.

i think stuart o'grady rode a fixed in one of the Tour Time Trials in recent years, like 3 or 4 years ago. i could be getting muddled up though - it may have been in the Giro

The first bicycle race ever was won a fixed wheel. By an Englishman.

The original tour director tried to ban the use of freewheels and particularly gears. Eventually he had to give in to the pressure and allow them though.
The first few tours were almost definitely all fixed.

"Once upon a time a young Englishman living in Paris won the first bicycle race in the world, over half a mile in the Parc-de-St-Cloud. The bike's in the city museum at Ely. Then he won the first road race, Paris to Rouen, taking ten and a half hours for the 134 km, without tyres, on unsurfaced tracks."

If this is something we all decide we'd like to do (t-shirt), someone start a new discussion and we'll get stuck in. I have contacts in this field. I'm not a massive fan of spoke cards but a t-shirt would be great! Providing we all chip in I reckon I can get them done on quality shirts for a nice price! Forget MashSF or all these companies making profit from the fixed wheel trend,(futura labratories next collection is based on fixed with slogans such has 'brains not brakes' across shirts and t-shirts!) we could have our own!
