• natureboy the lever has different leverage and the cable is bent much tighter.

Stick the lever on the left. It makes a huge difference.

• Todd
rear is now doing front duty on my current
fix (it took some persuading).

You can do that? Would you just replace the bolt with a longer one? Where d'ya get 'em from?
tried to get a longer main bolt but couldn't find one, so I got a longer version of the threaded thing that receives the bolt from the back of the fork. It was too long so I cut it down a bit.

The main problem then was that the drilling was too close to the headset so that the chunky bit of the bolt that holds the spring was banging up against the headset. Could have spaced it out but it was important to get as much of the thread inside the fork as possible, so I enlisted the help of our friendly lab techs in college and got them to machine the bolt so it would fit under the headset. That wasn't quite enough so I went at it with a dremel tool and ground out a bit more so it would fit around the curve of the headset. what a palaver - but it worked!

tried that and it did. felt a bit odd though. can't decide which side I prefer.

• hippy Where'd you get them from? Much diff between Ultegra and DA? I've always used Ultegra.. I'm not one for the high-end you see. Best bang for buck is me.

damn straight. if you want something good, get the second most expensive. if you want something cheap, get the second cheapest.

• What I should do is take the Ultegra off the Ribble and fit 'em to the Soma, then buy some long-reach/guard-clearing Ultegra calipers for the Ribble Audax/Winter, like it deserves.

I wonder if it's the hidden cable run (Campag fans love paying out Shimano's built-in helmet rack)? I'm not going to strip them down now (Dunwich first) but how tight are those cable bends under the bar tape?

Also, is there any way to adjust the brake lever 'reach'. They sit so far away from the bars it's silly.

Let me guess.. the brake pads for these are different to Shimano?

• I doubt the hidden cable run on Campy 'aero' levers is any different to the equivalent Shimano. That's only a factor on the Ergo/STI stuff.

I think the levers are just a bit old and shit - my Veloce reach is nothing like those ones you've got.

• But yeah, get the long reach for the Ribble (I think mine might even be the cheaper-than-ultegra-style ones, and they're great).

Brake pads probably interchangeable (unless you're talking about swapping the pad bit into different 'shoes').

• Hippy,

what you want is the ultimate in form over function

• And check the utterly useless 8 speed shifter! Wow!

Don't you know that left hand front brake levers are for Continental Cyclists only!

All you fake-euroengers should stop trying to appropriate the credibility of us real Continentals!

Bah!

• why does everyone hate shimano?
i have a shimano 105 on my fornt wheel and like it?

• is it an unwrtten rule?

• Buffalo Bill Hippy,
what you want is the ultimate in form over function

Is that one of those (in)famous Delta brakes? I've heard about them. :)

• joe_b why does everyone hate shimano?
i have a shimano 105 on my fornt wheel and like it?

Not everyone.. only silly people who like the far inferior Crapagnolo. :)

• hippy: did you get the right size hex tool? this should work. measure the edge of the bolt hole and go to a hardware shop. measure the edge of the hex keys they've got until you find the right one.

• I was just gonna visit a hardware store and see if they had 7mm. Then, once I've removed the crank I was going to beat it into the ground a few times. After this I plan on putting it in a prominent location on a busy London road. A week of this and it will be thrown into the ocean..

• if you're going to destroy your campy bits, i'll take 'em off you. i quite like them.

• Nup.. I'm doing humanity a favour.

Say, does anyone have access to a metal smelter?

• joe_b why does everyone hate shimano?

people hate shimano because they're ubiquitous. they're ubiquitous because they work. i have shimano on my road bike and i like it. i have a campag (mirage) front brake on my fixed and it's rubbish. can't be adjusted for shit.

• hippy Nup.. I'm doing humanity a favour.

Say, does anyone have access to a metal smelter?

what say i've got one and u hand over the bits i'll do it for you

• Hmm... let me think.. nope you cannot be trusted to destroy these parts! :P
I can't find a hardware store around here with a 7mm spanner. Will google and get back to yaz!

• I went to Timpsons who are a key shop and they didnt have any 7mm Allen Keys - whats that all about?? I tried Wasabi too but they only had chicken curry - no allen. By the way, dunno if it will help with metal but my mate's got an air raid shelter in his back garden - that any good?

Im thinking of giving up my bike for a horse - any comments? good idea?

• horses don't mount easily on hook on the wall like bikes do so it will take up more room in your flat.

• and they shit everywhere

• and it's much harder to do a front mount.
